Ordinary Meeting.

An ordinary meeting of the Board was then held, at which the same members were present. chaibman's statement. The Chairman's statement was as followb:—The following Bums have been paid in Bince our last meeting: — Whaifage, £1356 17s 6d j pilotage and port charges for January, 1894, £957 3a 2d j rent No. 5 shed, £312 10s; towage, storage, &c, £547 19a 2d; total, £3174 9s lOd. The bank book is on the table, showing a credit balance of £5689 15a lid. Monthly reports from the Btoreß department, electric lighting and cool chamber, and towage returns for January last, are on the table. Captain Clark writes, asking the Board to consider the question of building a house for the harbour-master on their own land in a suitable position; and stating his readiness to pay rent for the name. A report will be read from the harbourmaster, in reference to extensive repairs necessary to be done to our steam tug at no very distant date. Applications from Mr H. Dando, Engineer for the electric light and cool chamber, and from Captain Owen, Superintendent of the Lyttelton Sailors' Home, for increases of pay, will be read. A letter will be read from Messrs Agar and Eoberts, aßking for a reduction in the feeß payable under our regulations for a master boatman's license. The license fee is £1, which is in addition to the £3 fee paid by them for their steam launch and tug licenses. The charter of the Otago dredge having been extended by the Ctago Harbour Board to Wellington for an additional three months, dating from March 9 next, the former Board signified that they could not undertake to hold their offer of a charter to us open in tbo meantime. The correspondence iB on the table. The question of hiring a dredging plant, is still under the consideration of the Harbour Improvement Committee. The accounts for payment to-day amount to £2103 6s 6d ; they have been examined by two members of the Finance Committee. The sub-com-mittee appointed to deal with the tenders for the Bupply of storeß and coal for the ensuing year, met at the hour fixed for receiving them, and the following tenders were opened :—

The sub-committee accepted the Grey Valley Goal Company's tender, and I will ask the Board to confirm their action, and order the Board's seal to be affixed to the contract. There was only one tender sent in for the supply of stores, namely, Mr E. Forbes' ; but bb the schedule prices in hia tender were, on the whole, lower than those of last year's contract;, the committee decided to accept it, and I will ask the Board to confirm their action in the same manner. A letter has been received from the Sumner Borough Council in reference to the widening of the Sumner Jetty, and also in regard to erecting a landing place near Bell's Baths. I think their letter should be referred to the Harbour Improvement Committee for consideration. The sub-committee have had two conferences with the Sumner Borough Council, and they hare come'to a mutual understanding as to the foreshore boundary. The subcommittee will brine up their report after the Burvey has been completed, in time for our next meeting; Our next meeting will have to take place on Tuesday, Feb. 27 next, being the date fixed by law for the election of a chairman for the ensuing year. THE TUG LYTTELTON. A report waß read from the harbourmaster on the tug Lyttelton, stating that within the next two years the tug would require considerable repairs. After some discussion as to whether it was adviaable to repair the present tug or to obtain a new one, the report was adopted. RESIDENCE FOR HARBOUB-MASTEB. The harbour-master wrote, pointing out the inconvenience he was put to by being unable to obtain a residence where he could overlook the wharves, and offering, if the Board would build a house in a suitable locality, to rent the same. After discussion, the letter was referred . to the Harbour Improvement Committee to report. SALARIES. Several applications for increases of salary were referred to the Harbour Improvement Committee. STEAM LAUNCHES. A letter was read from Messrs Agar and Koberts asking for a reduction in the license fees charged on their steam launches. Ib wbb decided to reduce the charges on all steam ferry boats from .£3 10s to £2 ss. SINKING FUNB. It was resolved that the sum of £2100 of the Harbour Board's sinking fund now available should be invested in securities approved of by the Sinking Fund Commissioners. SUPPLY OF GOAL. The action of the committee in accepting the tender of the Grey Valley Company for the supply of coal for the year was approved. SUMNBB. The question of widening the Sumner jetty was referred to the Harbour Improvement Committee to report. EXTENSION OF TIME. Messrs Murray and Arnold were granted an extension of time to complete their contract for the supply of ironbark timber foi repairs to the jetties.
