FRIZE DISTRIBUTIONS
GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL. ! The annual distribution of prizes to the pupila attending the Girls' High School ; took place last evening in the lecture ' theatre of Canterbury College. The Btage was nicely decorated with pot plants, and the room was filled with pupils and their friendß. The Countess of Glasgow had consented to distribute the prizes, and on her arrival she was received by Mr H. E. Webb, acting-chairman of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College, and the lady principal of the school, and conducted to a seat on the dais. Her ladyship was accompanied by Mrs Stewart, Miss Wauehope and Mr Clayton. Proceedings commenced with the cantata The Gipsy: Quern, very nicely sung by a number of the pupils, under the baton of Mr G. F. Tendall. The various examinert| having read their reports on the work of the ecbool, the Countess of Glasgow acknowledged the complimentary remarks of the chairman of the Board of Governors, and distributed the prizes. The distribution of prizes took place on Friday evening. There was a very large attendance. Mrs A. E. G. Ehodes presented the sewing prizes. Me3srs A. E. G. Bhodes and B. Heaton Bhodes gave addresses, and congrahilated the parents of the district upon having such an efficient teaching Btaff, and upon the excellent report from the inspectors and the Education Board. The children gave some songs during the evening. Mr A. E. G. Rhodes presented the prizes, each child receiving a well-bound volume. Special prizes were awarded as follows :— Dux medal, William M'Nab ; Standard V., Harry Goldthorpe ; Standard IV., Joseph Walter; drill, Reginald Walter and A. Malcolm; gymnastic exercises, Thomas Pepper. Special- prizes for sewing were given by Mrs A. E. G. Bhode3, Mrs Beece, Mrs Moir, Mrs Bradshaw, Mrs Walter and Miss Eyan. At the conclusion a hearty vote of thanks was raised to Mr and Mrs A. E. Gj Ehodes and Mr E. Heaton Rodes, after which the meeting terminated.
