Settlement in Victoria.
It ia the intention of the Victorian ■ Cabinet (says the Leader) to place a sum of £20,000 on the Estimates to provide for the advance of .£ls to each man who takes up land under the provision's of the village settlement and homestead Association sections of the Land Settlement Act. This sum will enable the Minister for Lands to place 1333 unemployed men on the land. He wishes it to be clearly understood that the £15 advance will only be given to men who really need pecuniary assistance, and that those who have a little money will be required to take up their allofcmeats without State assistance. The Minister expects that in this way at least 2000 men will eventually be placed in a position to earn a livelihood by cultivating the soil. He ha 3 handed over the administration of the Act to Mr Thomas, the chief steward, who ' will ,in future deal with all the applications for allotments. A calendar, showing the proper times to sow different seeds and plant various kinds of trees, and the methods to be used, has been prepared bythe experts of the Agricultural Depart- . ment. Every man applying for land will be furnished with a copy of the calendar.
