AT NEW BRIGHTON.
The New Brighton Sailing Club also celebrated the opening of the season on Saturday afternoon, and a fleet of some i dozen boats were manoeuvred up and down at Bligh's Corner and to the Tripod while the wind lasted. No real racing was possible, I owing to the light and veering wind, but barring the absence of racing excitement, the opening day was most successfully kept by the Club. There was a good crowd of visitors, and the excursion was enjoyed, even though the wind was.co much against sailing. The boats went for short trips with visitors on board instead of entering into much competition, and the afternoon thus proved a very pleasant one. The d»y was further celebrated on land, and a bon-fire was built and eong and story indulged iv until 10 o'clock in the evening. Mr Prince catered in good Btyle. Dancing was kept up in a large marquee, good music being provided. The entire affair took the form of a picnic, and as such was most enjoyable. The boats of the Club have been much improved, and the membership haa increased encouragingly. During the season there should be some good sailing: done and some records made.
