NORTH CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION CUP MATCHES.

The firsU round of the North Canterbury Cricket Association Cup matches was commenced on Saturday. The Ashley County first eleven met with defeat at Amberley by the local Club by 1 three runs and seven wickets. The County men were first to bat, and they .put together 52; Bailey 12, Warner 12 and Gulliver 11 being the only double - figure scorers. Amberley made 55, Timms with. 16 being the highest scorer. The County in the second innings made 61 for six wickets and declared the innings closed, Warner contributing 17, Bailey 16 and Helmore 11. The County team's hope of disposing of their opponents before time with a small score was far from being realised, as three of them knocked up 61,Adams playing a good innings for 28 not out, and Robs putting together 11. In the two innings Helmorefor the County took eight wicketa, Gulliver two and Good two. For Amberley Crowley took seven wickets and Baird three. The County played one iK«tn short and two substitutes. The County thirteen also suffered defeat at the hands of the Oxford eleven, the game being played at Rangiora, and decided on the first innings. The County representatives in their first innings made 86, Gower being answerable for 30, Mansell for 11 and Allan 10. Oxford went three better, making 89, Weld contributing 30, Gorton 21, Fisher 14 and Feary 11. The County men went in again, and on the call ' of time had knocked up 69 for nine wioketa, Dr Volcfeman 26 (not out), Mansell 11 and Gower 10 being the highest Bcorers. In the bowling for Oxford Feary took ten wickets, Ryde four, Harle two and Gorton two; for the County Mansell took four wickßt3, Templer three, Volckman two and Garty one. Tho Woodend and Oust teams met on the ground of the former, and the visitors were beaten by au inninga and fifty rune, ' their second innings being a complete collapße. Woodend wer,e the firßt to bat, and scored 118, Smith sen. making 43 not out and Smith jun. 20, Uru and Malthus 12. Gust put together 50, of which Atkinson made 16 and Chapman 12. Following on they scored only 18, the bowling of Garrard, who took eight wickets for 16 runs, being altogether too good for them. Uru also bowled well, taking threo wicketa. For Cunt Chapman secured seven wickets. Tne Kantfiora Cricket Club opened its \ season on Thursday at the Recreation j Ground. There was a good muster, and side 3 were chosen by Messrs J. Reynolds and P. Cosfcia. The team captained by tho , latter made 74, the highest scorer being H. C. Bailey not out 29. Mr Reynolds' team made 41, W. Gower (15) and E. R. Good (10) being the only ecdrera who reached double figures. For the winners Good look eight wickets, and for the other side Bailey made tho beat record with five. Mr Bailey gave a bat for the highest score, bat winning it himself he handed it to the Club. Refreshments, provided by the Mayor (Mr J. Sansom), were dispensed ■ by the Mi9Deß Blockett and Mias Sansoui.
