NEW TOEK, Oct. 8. Yachting—An American Victory. The first of five races for possession of the America Cup was sailed to-day under favourable circumstances, there being a gdod breeze. Lord Dunraven's yacht Valkyrie led for the first hour, but soon after that she was passed by the American representative Vigilant, which rounded the stake boat with a lead of eight minutes, and ultimately won by six minutes. Valkyrie, however, was steadily gaining on her towards the finish. ST PETERSBURG, Oct. 7. Russia in Central Asia. The Eussian G-overnment is appointing a Viceroy for the purpose of solidifying its possessions in central Asia. TANGIER, Oct. 7. Holy War in Morocco. Fourteen thousand Moors have proclaimed a holy war, and threaten Melilla. The Spanish Government is sending reinforcements amounting to 20,000 troops. It has also seized a British schooner, which was supplying the Moors with arms. PARIS, Oct. 8. Italy and France. The Parisian Press states that Italy is mobilising her fleet and strengthening her frontier forts in readiness for war with Prance. The Panama Frauds. M. Blondin, who was imprisoned in connection with the Panama frauds, has been released. BERLIN, Oct. 7. CholeraThe medical men at Hamburg have proved that cholera microbes can exist in sea water, indicating that there is danger in quarantining vessels near tidal rivers. SYDNEY, Oct. 9i The Canadian Delegate. Mjr Bovrell, who arrived by the Warrimoo, says that the Canadian Govemment has made no arrangements of any kind concerning concessions in regard to duties on wine and wool, in return for similar concessions by the Australian Colonies, but he bad come to ascertain what Australian staple exports were, what Canada was expected to give in return, and on what termß. Stan bury. Stanbury, the champion sculler, returned from America by the Warrimoo. BRISBANE, Oct. 9. The Kanaka Trade. The Chief Secretary has removed the recruiting restrictions which applied to Santa Cruz, the Southern Solomon Islands and the New Hebrides. Cycling. At the bicycle tournament on Saturday Kerr, of New South Wales, won the one and ten-mile championships. HOBABT, Oct. 9. The Alleged Train Wrecker. Briggs, the alleged train wrecker, has been committed for trial. «
