I Lecture.— At the Tuam street theatre this evening Mr W. W. Oollins will deliver a lecture on "Prohibition Tactics," in which he will answer the address lately given by Mr Ninian MeJville. Albion Football Club.— A concert and ball in conneotion with the Albion Football Club will be held at St Michael's Bchoolroom to-morrow evening. The proceeds will go towardß defraying the expenses of the journey of the Club's firat fifteen to Dunedin to play the Pacific Club in that town. Electoral Bolls.— ln order thafc persons residing in tbe Sydenham portion of the Christchurch electorate may be enabled to ascertain whether their namea appear on the electoral roll, Mr E. Jones, of Sydenham, has obtained a copy, which will be open for inspeotion at hia plaoe of business in Colombo road. He has also a supply of claims for enrolment, so that any person whose name ia not on can at once be registered by applying to him. Dog Poisoning.— -The "dog fiend" is at his evil practices again, and some valuable animals are stated to have been poisoned. A very fine dog, which had evidently met his death in that way, was found lying dead in Mr Wilkin's garden at Fendalton, this morning. Owners of valuable dogs wonld do well to watch their pets carefully for fear they shonld meet a like fate. ENTE6.TAiNUENT.--0n Monday evening an entertainment was given at the Bangiora Church of England schoolroom, in aid of the Sunday sohool prize fund. Owing to the unfavourable weather and counter attractions, the attendance was not large. The Bey F. P. Fendall presided, and the Serformers were Mrs Eelph, Misses M. 'orleßse, Lisaaman, Amy, Templer, Messrs G. Barlow, W. Tcshach, J. Voss and the chairman. The proceedings were cloßed with a vote of thanks to those who had assisted. Sooiai. Gathering. — Last Thursday evening the tailors and taiioresses of Victoria House and their friendß held a very successful "social" inthe Lyceum. Dancing was indulged in with great epirit nntil half-past two next morning. The music was furnished in a very satisfactory manner by Mr H. Fleming. Mr A. Hutton acted as M.C. Songs were given dnring the evening by Mrs Hall, Miss Gamble, Messrs Clark, Dennis, Baker, Queree aud Marie, a bone eolo by Mr A. Hatton, and a dance by Mr Carr. The catering was satisfactory carried out by Mr Smith. Waltham Literary SodßTY.—The weekly meeting of the Waltham Literary Sooiety was held on Tuesday, August 8, Mr A. Clifford/Vice-President, in the ohair. There was a fair attendance.. Tim business for the evening was a papea- by Mr A. Clifford on " Machinery in its- Relation to Labour," which created considerable discussion. A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the meeting. Another weekly meeting was held on Tuesday,, August 15, Mr A. Clifford, Vice-President, in the chair. There was a very good attendance. Mr Welehford read a paper from Emerson's essay., which .created- a fair discussion. The report- -*£_d balance-sheet for last quarter were read.. The report was passed and the adoption of the balance-sheet was held over. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Hon Secretary for his services during the paat quarter. The Hon Secretary suitably responded. On Friday evening, August ISi. the ÜBual children's entertainment was given. There were over one hundred ohildren present, and the entertainment was in every way a success. Mr Bobson gave a very good Punch and Judy show, after which songs, recitations, &c, were given by Misses Adams, Owen, and Morrison. Mr Adams played a few accordeon soloa during the interval, after whioh a number of lantern slides were Bhown by Mr and Mrs Clifford. A hearty vote of thanks to Mr Bobson for hu services olosed the entertainment. Oddfellowship. — During the paat two or three months eeveral of the Lodges in the Ashley District 1.0.0. F., M.U., have been exchanging visits with the object of fostsring the fraternal feeling between members of the Order. On Monday evening members of the Amberley, Leithfield, Woodend, Ohoka and Cußt Lodges, to the number of about fifty-five, visited the Bangiora Lodge. Invitations were also given to the other Lodges in the district, but owing to distance and the unfavourable weather, apologies for non-representation had to be accepted. Amongßt the visitors there were also members of the Eaiapoi, City of Christchurch, and Benevolent Lodges; and, with the local brethren, the hall was filled. ' At the conclusion of the ordinary Lodge business, Past Grand Gillespie moved a most cordial vote of thanks tothe visitors for their presence, and referred to the good that was evidently accruing from the interchange of visits. The motion was seconded by Bro H. Norfolk, and was carried with applause. The motion was acknowledged by P.P.G.M. Crampton (Amberley), N.G. M'Namara (Leithfield), P.S. Hassall (Cust), P.G. Eder (Woodend), P.G. Wright (Ohoka), P.G. Taylor (Eaiapoi) and P.G. M'lntosh (Benevolent). After the close of the Lodge the visitors were entertained at supper, and two or three hours were pleasantly Bpent with singing. Several ladies kindly attended to the supper arrangements, and they were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Gordon Hall Institute.— The Com- • mittee of this institution, which is situated in St Asaph street weßt, and which exists I for the purpose of providing means of ! recreation, instruction and amusement for - lads in Christchurch, will be glad of the 7 j assistance of any ladies or gentlemen 1 willing to help them in their work. This ! can be given by means of personal assistance and supervision in the gymnaeium, class or reading rooms, providing help in occasional concerts or other amusements. ' If funds were forthcoming the Committee would provide an additional large room and a piano. Any willing to help may ' obt iin further information from Mrs I Packe, Abberley road, St Albans, Messrs Eincaid, J. Plaisted, jun., or the Hon Trear-.i-.rer, Mr J. Peckover, 196, Hereford 1 street. j The Palette Club.— The exhibition of - pictures under the auspices of the Christchurch Palette Club attracted a large ( attendance to the Art Gallery yesterday. In the evening au excellent programme of ' music wbb provided by Mrs Wilson and ! Messrs Corbett and Biinz. The exhibition J will remain open every afternoon and evening during the remainder of the week. To-night mußic will be provided by Mißs Mee3on and Messrs Day, Arthur Merton, Gundersen, Blakesley, Seymour and Poet. Canterbury Methodist Council.--A convention of the Canterbury Methodist | Council was opened at the Durham street 1 Wesleyan Church, last evening, by a prayer ! meeting. There was a large attendance, j and the chair was occupied by the Bey H. 18. Dewsbury. Addresses were delivered : by the Bey G. Hounsell and Mr J. Lomas. | This evening the conference will be continued, the Bey S. Macfarlane occupying the chair. Addresses on "The Secret Power" will be given by the Bey P. W. . Faircloughand Mr J. M. Bourne. Dogs and Bots. —The following is from tbe Oamaru Mail •— An Oamaru Chinese gardener is greatly annoyed by dogs perambulating over his seed beds, and for the purpose of dealing with the pest he ; procured a shot gun, with which weaf oa he gave one or two dogs " a solemn warnj ing." The other night, seeing an object ; walking along the ditch alongside the • fence, he fired at it, and a boy got up and • ran for bare life. John mistook tho boy 1 for a dog, but as hia shooting is about as 1 oblique as his eyeß he shattered nothing but the boy's nerves. What the boy wanted there is not known, but it is pretty safe to say that he will not go back in a j hurry. The Chinaman has also knocked ! off firing at dogs, thinking, no doubt, that ; he might kill a boy.
