<t> — CHBISTCHUBCH. This Dat. (Before C. M. Gray and J. Hamilton, Esqs.) Dbunkbnness. — Christina Lawson, a very old offender, pleaded "Not Guilty." The offence was proved by Constable Sinclair, and Bhe was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, with hard labour. — -A first offender was fined '. Ss, and coata, in default, the usual alternative. Alleged Larceny. — William Brittan Jones was charged with stealing, on or about June 23 and 29, a horse-collar and a pair of blankets, value 30s, the property of Frederick Baretta, of Spreydon. He pleaded "Nofc Guilty." Inspector Broham [ asked for a remand till Friday next, to enable witnesses to be brought from the ' country. The remand was granted. I accused being admitted to bail, himself J in £50 and in two sureties of £25 each. Alleged Fobgery. — John Frederick Beeee, on remand, was charged with | having on Feb, 22, 1892, forged a receipt for £7 and obtained from Kaye and ' Carter the sum of £7 by means of the 1 said receipt. He was further charged j with having, on Feb. 24, 1892, forged a receipt for £10 and obtained that sum from Eaye and Carter by means of the said receipt. Inspector Broham conducted • the case against the accused, for whom Mr Donnelly appeared. The two cases were taken together. John Paterson Newman, manager for Kaye and Carter, deposed that, on Feb. 22 of lasfc year, the accused came td .the office of Messrs Kaye and Carter, and asked if they were buying grass seed. Witness replied that they were, and accused said he had some forsale at Le Bon'B Bay. A price was fixed, end a contract note (produced) was made out, which accused signed as "H. Barnett, of Le Eon's Bay." The accused asked for an advance of money, as he had some payments to make, and witness advanced him £7, for which accused gave a receipt (produced). Two days afterwards accused came and said the seed was coming up in J one of the steamers, snd he would go down ' to Lyttelton to look after ifc, but as he had futther payments to make he asked witness for a further advance, and witness gave him £10 more, for which accused also gave a receipt (produced). The seed did not arrive, and witness wrote to "H. Barnett, Le Bon's Bay," but found then that he had been imposed upon. John Slattery, a cabman, remembered driving accused to Kaye and Carter's on Feb. 22, 1892. , Henry Barnett stated that he had known accused for the last eighteen years, and that accused had been living off and on at Le Bon's Bay for eight or nine years. The witness knew nothing of the documents produced, except that one of them had j been sent to him by Messrs Kaye nnd ' Carter. There was no other person in j Le Bon's Bsy of the name of H. Barnett j but witness's father, who was an old man, ' and did no business, witness doing it for ' him. This concluded the evidence. Accused reserved his defence, and was committed for trial at tho nexfc session of the Supreme Court, bail being allowed in two sureties of £50 each. (Before E. Beetham, Esq., E.M.)
