SUNDAY TRADING.

A Fine of £5 InflictedAt the Christchurch Resident Magietrate's Court to-day, before Mr H. W. Bishop, 8.M., and Captain Deighton, J.P., George Butler, licensee of the Junction Hotel, Halswell, was charged with selling two glasses of beer to George Legg on Sunday, May 28. Mr Cassidy appeared for defendant, who denied the offence. George Legg, a labourer, deposed that he resided at Hals well, about a mile and a half from defendant's hotel. About two o'clock on Sunday afternoon May 28, withess went into the hotel with his brother, and had two glasses -of beer. Witness paid 6d for the beer, but he did not remember whether defendant or his wife supplied him with, the beer. He remained in the hotel about an hoar on the afternoon in question, and had come more drinks, which his brother paid for. Stephen Legg, a brother of the last witness, said he lived about half a mile from the junction Hotel. He was in tfce bagatelle-room about two o'olock on Sunday afternoon, May 28. Defendant, supplied witness and his brother with two glasses of beer. Witness' brother paid for the beer. Another man who was in the hotel also had some drinks. Henry Newton deposed that he lived about three miles from the Junction Hotel, Halswell. He was in the hotel on Sunday afternoon, May 28. Witness had some drinks, and the two Leggs, who were also in the hotel, had some beer. The defence was that the Leggs were not supplied with beer on Sunday afternoon, May 28. The Bench held that the case had been proved, and defendant was fined JBS and costs.
