» The " Star."— Readers of the Star will be presented with an excellent budget of reading to-morrow afternoon. The eight pages of the Saturday issue will contain the continuation of Clark Russell's interesting sea story, several short stories, an article on successful lady inventors, fashion notes, a curious paper on " Strange Playmates," and an article on the question "Is the Novel 'Played Oat?'" There will, in addition, be a collection of household hints, a column of "funnyisms," and a large quantity of miscellaneous reading, besides the news of the day and specially written articles. Unredeemed Pledges. — To-morrow, Messrs Bowman and Son will hold a large sale of unredeemed pledges in their rooms, ! Particulars appear in our advertising columns. Sunday Trading.— At the Christchurch Resident Magistrate's Court, to-day, the licensee of the Junction Hotel, Haluweil, was fined JBS and coats for supplying liquor to a man on Sunday, May 28. Waimakabibi River Boabd. — The members of the Waimakariri River Board left town in one of MrLukey's four-in-hand drags at one o'clock to-day to visit the Belfast drain, which has been considerably damaged, The English Mail.— The English mail via San Francisco will leave Wellington at 11 p.m. to-day, arriving at Lytfcelton to-morrow afternoon, and a delivery will be made at the Chief Post Office of letterß usually delivered by letter carriers, also at the delivery department from 7 to 8 p.m. Supreme Court. — His Honor Mr Justico Denniston sat in Chambers this morning, and disposed of a quantity of busineßS. On Monday the oase, Sefton t. Wyatfc, will be taken, before a Special Jury of four, and the dates of hearing of the civil cases postponed from last week's sitting will be fixed. There will be a Bitting in banco next week. An Expensive Bids.— At the Christchurch Resident Magistrate's Court, to-day, two bicycle iiders were each fined 20s and costs 7a, for riding their bicycles on footpaths in the Borough of Sydenham. Mr H. W. Bishop, R.M., said bicycle riding on the footpaths in the suburbs was becoming an abominable and intolerable nuisance, and it would have to be pnt a stop to by a strong hand. The Matob's Belief Fund. — His Worship the Mayor attended at the Council Chambers this morning, to distribute orders for groceries, fuel, blankets, &c, to those in need of help. For about an hour a constant Btream of men and women poured in. In many cases it was found that the applicants were already receiving charitable aid ; and a number of the cases came from outside the city boundaries. Lawters' Btlls. — In reference to the proceedings in a case which came before him in Chambers to-day, his Honor Mr Justice Denniston remarked that he would look closely to the proceedings in these equity cases, and would discourage the piling up of necessary costs. East Christchurch School Committee.—An adjourned meeting of the East Christchurch School Committee was held on Thursday evening, all the members being present excepting Meßsrß Brunt and Allison. After a long discussion as to the merits of the applicants, Mr W. G. Cook.eon was appointed assistant master at the main school. Eabt Belt Mutual Improvement Association. — The weekly meeting of the East Belt Mutual Improvement Association was held on Thursday evening, when there was a large attendance. The Journal was read by Mies Howard, tbe editreßß, and comprised papers entitled "Theatre Going," " Influence of Woman" and "Artemus Ward;" also, observations bj "A Mouse in the Corner" and "Stray Shots" by "Bohemian." "The Poets' Corner" and "Fun Column" made up a very excellent Journal. Good Templaby. — The Bud of Woolston Juvenile Temple held its usual meeting on Monday evening. Although tbe weather was bad there was a full attendance of members. After routine business harmony waa indulged in, the following contributing recitations : — Bros Wise, Spreadbury, Bugg, sen., G. Tborne, and Sister Bugg. Sister Gilbert, D.S.J.T. gave a reading and comments on the evils of the use of tobacco. The Temple was closed by the C.T. Sister Rennio and Superintendent Sister Turner at 8.30 p.m. Citt and Suburban Tbamwat Cohfant. — The work of laying the City and Suburban Tram line along the Stanmore road has come to a standstill ■ for the present. In the deed of concession from the City Council to the Company, a clause was inserted by which the Company agreed to regrade the Stanmore road on the north side of the bridge, so that the drainage might fall into the river. The Company was proceeding to lay down the line without doing this work when it was served with a notice from the City Surveyor to do the necessary works. Mr Brightling, the contractor, at once stopped work, and the matter will be considered at the City Council meeting on Monday evening. Morbis-tube Shooting. — The annual meeting of Messrs Wigram Bros.' Morristube Club, at the Heathcote Valley, was held last week. The report on the past year's Bhooting showed that the Club had been fairly successful in its matches with outside Clubs, and that the Club competitions had been closely contested, but that the Bhooting had not been up to the usual standard. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year : — President, Mr H. F. Wigram; Vice-Presidents, Meßßrs E. S. Vernon and A. Wiffen; Captain, Mr H. S. Hewlett (re-elected); Vice-Captain, Mr C. Bearsley ; Secretary, Mr H. S. Hewlett; Treasurer, Mr J. Qilmora (re-elected); Custodian, Mr J. Nixon; Committee, the Captain, Vicej Captain, Treasurer, and Messrs Nixon, Elford and Poulton ; Handicapping Com* mittee, the Captain, Vice-Captain, and Mr J. Nixon. The following were the prizewinners last season : — Messrs H. S. Hewlett, S. Gilmore, William Evans, T. Bunting, E. Attewell, F. George and W. M'Dowell. KangiOba Exhibition. — A meeting of the Sectional Committees in connection with the Rangiora Exhibition was held | last night. There was a large attendance, Mr E. R. Good in the ohair. It was reported that the ladies had responded very heartily to the invitation to assist at the Exhibition. On the motion of Mr G. F. Smith it was agreed to circulate a requisition for signature asking the ' Mayor to proclaim a half-holiday on June SO, for the opening of the Exhibition. It was also decided to ask the Brass Band, Volunteers, Fire Brigade and Friendly Societies to march in procession through the town ; and the opening wao fixed for 3 p.m., the Mayor (Mr J. Sansom) to take the leading part in the ceremony. It was resolved to ask intending exhibitors to forward particulars of their exhibits by June 22. It was arranged to issue family tickets. The Secretary was instructed to apply to Inspector Broham for additional police protection during the time the Exhibition waa open. Mr E. Relph was appointed Treasurer, and it was decided to open an account with the Colonial Bank. The matter of insuring the exhibits was left with the Secretary. Mr G. Luxton promised the loan of hia traction engine for driving the dynamos to be used in lighting the hall with electricity ; and the Secretary stated that Mr W. A. Burt had promised to provide a sufficient quantity of Grey Valley coal to supply the engine. A hearty vote of thankß was passed to both gentlemen for their kindness. Oddfellowship. — The regular meeting of the Loyal Addington Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U., was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Addington, on Monday evening, N.G. Bro J. R. Carey presiding. There was a good attendance. The Sick Visitors' report was very favourable, the various brothers on the Bick list having declared off. Vouchers were passed for Bick pay. A communication waa received from the St George Lodge, Invercargill, stating that Bro J. J. Griffiths, of Loyal Addington Lodge, had met with an accident, and was in_ the hospital, and that the local sick visitors were giving him every attention. Two new members were proposed by Bro C. Gatea. The officers and members of the Loyal Benevolent Lodge paid a surprise visit. The nominations for officers were closed; there being eight nominated for N.G., five for V.G., and twelve for E.S. The N.G. declared the Lodge adjourned, when light refreshments were handed round, and harmosy was contributed by the following :-— Benevolent Lodge, Bros Maling, Niles, Ward and D.P.G.M. Bro Palmer; Volunteer Lodge, T.G. Bro Spicer and Bro S. Leßter ; City Lodge, P.P.G.M. Bro Kent ; Phillipstown Lodge, Bro Saunders ; Addington Lodge, Bros Asquith, Kinsman, A. L. Gourlay, Alpe, Kent, Gates and "Woods. On resuming the following Brothers thanked the Lodge for the third sentiment; District officers, D.P.G.M. Bro Palmer; Benevolent Lodge, Bro Ward ; City Lodge, P.P.G.M. Bro Kent; Volunteer Lodge, Bro Spicer ; Phillip3town L'd'p, Bro Colling; Asbburfron Lodge, Bro ! Cockburn; Amberley Lodge, Bro Forle.'.
