SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL.
THIS DAY. A meeting of the Selwyn County Council wa3 held this morning} present^— Mr D. . M'Millan (Chairman), Messrs W. Dunlop, H. W. Peryman, T. H. Anson, J. G. Murray, T. York, J. Bennie and W. Boag. chaibman's btatjbhbnt. The Chairman stated tbat a letter had been received from the Education Board in reference to the encroachment o£ the Selwyn near Glentuimel, and stating that the Board did not intend taking any action in the matter. A letter had come to hand from the Geraldine Acolimatieation Society, suggesting that legislation should be obtained to make the poisoning of email birds compulsory. A letter from the Geraldine County Council suggested a conference on the small birds nuisance. The Lake Cole* ridge Road Board had written asking the Council for a grant for the poisoning of keas. A communication from the Bailway Commissioners in reference to the damage done to the roads by , traction engines would be laid before the Council. Letters had also been received from the Tai Tapu, Spreydon, Ellesmere, Springs, Halswell and Rakaia Road Boards, and the Wooleton Town Board, in reference to payment of amounts due foe Hospital and Charitable Aid. The Charitable Aid Board forwarded a list of persona in receipt of relief oh June 1. A letter was also received from the Halswell Road Board relative to a separate rate in that district. SMALL BIBDS NUIBANCE. The matter of the small birds nuisance was discussed at length, and it was decided to agree with the idea of a conference of Chairmen of County Councils on the subject, and Mr M'Millan was appointed to represent the Selwyn County at the Conference. It was decided to comply with the request of the Lake Coleridge River Board, for a grant towards the destruction of the kea. TEACTION ENGINES. The Railway Commissioners wrote, enclosing extracts fron? a paper read before a London institution on the damage done to roads by traction engines. The letter was received. CHARITABLE AID* After discußßion it was resolved, in. reference to the charitable aid liet — tf That this Council suggest to the Charitable Aidf Board the desirability of placing the names of recipients in groups under the headings of the various districts to which they--belonged." After dealing with water-race mattersand routine business, the Council adjourned.
