J A very large, number, of persons ( assembled at the University thiß afternoon to take part in the ceremony arranged to celebrate the University having come of age. Dr Stuart, the Chancellor, referred in hia address to the founding of the University. ••.' Profeisor Sale dealt with English Universities and the, changes which had taken place during the past twenty. years in the way of extension, greater liberality in admitting students, and concentration and specialisation of subjects. Processor Shand dealt with the growth of the local University and with its tweaty-one years of work. Dr Fitchefct referred to tbe work done in other parts of the Colony, chiefly dealing with Canterbury College. Sir B. Stout Bpoke on probable future development,' and, taking as a basiß that the University fixes the standard of education for the community, argued that it was wise patriotism to encourage the progress of institutions which would do more for true national progress than anything effected by the creation of wealth. A conversazione was held this evening, and was largely attended.
