Wednesday, will leave by to-morrow's express. : Chamber of Commerce.— The quarterly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held this afternoon, when the President, . Mr E. S. Harley, delivered an addreaa on current commercial topics, which is re- ' ported elsewhere. i • Supreme Court. — The -civil sittings of the Supreme Court were opened this morn- ; ing before his Honor Mr Justice Denniston. ! All the cases set down for hearing were ' adjourned. His Honor also held a sitting in divorce, and disposed of several applica- | tions. Sittings in chambers and bankj raptcy will be held to-morrow. Good Tempi^ary.— A meeting of the i Marinera' Pride Lodge, Lyttelton, was held on Friday evening. The Lodge was opened by the Chief Templar, Bro J. T. ! Norton, and a large amount of business jwas gone through. One candidate was 'initiated. The Lodge then proceeded to 'harmony; Bongs were given by Broß j Norton, E. Bladder and Sister Stewait, j and a very pleasant evening was spent. The i Lodge was closed in due form by the C.T., j Bro J. T. Norton. J The Typhoid Fever Scabb.— At the I ordinary meeting of the Christchurch j Hospital Board this afternoon Mr Moor \ asked how many seamen from the : ahip Hinemoa were in the Hos- ; pital suffering from . typhoid fever. The ! Chairman replied that there were six or j seven men from the Hinemoa, but they I were not all suffering from typhoid fever. j Be had seen the captain of the ship, who j stated that while the ship was in Welling- : ton she was moored alongside a bad'sewer, : the smell arising therefrom causing several i of the members of the crew to be taken Jill. Women's Institute. — Although the ; weather was anything but favourable, the j photographic class had a good attendance ion Saturday afternoon. The League of the Cross. — The weekly meeting of the League of the Cross took I place on Friday evening last. The Rev Bro Joseph occupied the chair, and about eighty members were present. Five new members were elected during the evening, and a large amount of business was transacted. The Bey Father Bell congratulated the members on their undertaking, wished the Society every- success, and said he would do all in his power to help it. The programme of the evening* consisted of a Booial. Songs and recitations were given by Mesßrs T. Geoghegan.M. M'Namara.W. Holland, J. and R. Peterson, F. Mulvahill, J. Griffin, M. Beddington, J. Hennessy, F. Evans and J. Alston. At the close of the meeting Mr J. P. Young moved a vote of thanks to the Chairman. ■ Oust.— On Saturday evening a meeting of those interested in holding publio sports at Cust took place at the Institute Hall. There was a representative attendance, Mr G. H. White occupying the chair. It was reported that there was in hand a credit balance of a substantial amount. Officers were elected as follow, subjeot to their consent j— Patron, Mr R. Moore, M.H.B. j President, Mr A. T. Chapman; VicePresidents, Messrs S.Horrell, J.C. Tipping, and W. Busb, junr; Secretary, Mr J. Walsh; Treasurer, Mr E. W. Cooper; General Committee, the Rev M'Kenzie Gibson, and Messrs S. Atkinson, S. Head, W. Livingstone, J. Crysell, and G. Marten. It was reaolved to carry out sports similar to those held last year, on a date to be fixed at a future meeting. Oxford Library.— The building just erected by the Domain Board in Pearson Park has become the home of the books belonging to the Oxford Library. The Domain Board has very liberally granted the Library Committee the use of the building for the purpose of a library and read-ing-room, the Board reserving to itself the right of holding in it its own proceedings, and also the right to let the large room for any purpose on three nights in each week. On Wednesday last the booto were removed from the Orange Hall, where they have been during the erection of the present building. The building is very nicely designed for the purpose of a library and readingroom, and is quite an ornament to that portion of the town. A very handsome picture* which has been presented to the Library Committee, is hung on the wall of the reading-room. It is a portrait of the late and much-esteemed member of the House (Mr W. F. Pearson) drawn in pencil by Mr Cambridge, artist, Sumner. The work is of great merit, and beautifully done, and the likeness is life-like.
