There are 675 teachers and 295 Civil Service candidates, besides six for drawing. For Class E there are 264 candidates, to complete E 128, and to complete D 116. For the junior Civil Service examination there are 230 candidates, and for the senior 65. Of the 675 candidates for certificates there are only 60 who have never been in the service, and there are 47 who had been in but left; 231 are pupilteachers, and 52 are normal school students. The last quarter of 1892 was the first in the history of the Colony that the average attendance reached 100,000, the figures being 100,902. The average for the whole year was 99,066. At the end of the year there were 3178 teachers and 159 sewing mistresses employed in the public schools of the Colony ; 1355 were male and 1823 female. Of these, 258 boys and 797 girls were pupil-teachers. The total salaries paid amounted to £315,400.
