In "How to Deal "With the Unemployed," Mr John Burns suggests a scheme for ameliorating the condition of the working claseea. " Ouida," in "The Sina of Society," has a tilt, in her customary plain-speaking manner, at the fashionable people of .the day. " The Antipodean Schoolboy " is delineated by a Colonial schoolmaster, and "Gems from the Schoolroom " is a humorous collection of schoolboy blunders, which shows the jumbled state of some juvenile brains. John Foster Keys brings hia History of the Making of New Zealand down to Hone Heke's war. "An Excavator's Camp " ia devoted to the adventures of a party engaged in exploring ancient ruins in mid- Africa. ""Healing by Electricity " reports some extraordinary results at a public demonstration in Melbourne. The ladies' page contains some particularly appropriate articles", amongst which may be mentioned " A Question of Etiquette/ and " Marriage as a Woman's Aim." Criminal Session. — The criminal session of the Supreme Court will open on , Monday next, before his Honor Mr Justice Denniston. The calendar appears elsewhere. Education Boabd.— The North Canterbury Education Board held its ordinary meeting this morning, but, in the absence of three of its members, transacted only the routine portion of the business. Firb. — Mrs Adams' flaxmill at Amberley was burnt down at noon to-day. The scutching machine, the shed, and a quantity of flax were destroyed. The fire was caused by the heating of a bearing. The loss is about .£4O. There was no insurance. The stripper and engine were Bayed. Eifle Shooting. — The following team will represent the Christchurch MartiniHenry Eifle Club ia their match with the Lyttelton Martini Eifle Club on the latter' a range on Saturday :— Messrs J. E. Wakelin, O. W. Turpin. A. W. Jones, F. S. Parker, W. Taylor, W. A. Banks, A. Gundersen, and G. A. Tozer. Emergenoy — J. C. Adams. The team will proceed to Lyttelton by the 1.25 p.m. train. The Kinqslet Club. — A general meeting of the trades section of the Kingeley Club was held on Wednesday evening in the rooms, Inglis' buildings. The Hon J. E. Jenkinson (President) occupied the chair, and there was a very large attendance of members. After the ordinary business had been transacted, the singing class gave several songa and chorusea under the direction of Mr Haig, The orchestral band also contributed several pieces. Altogether a very enjoyable evening was spent by all present. Knights op Labour. — The usual weekly session of the Rawhiti Assembly was held on Wednesday, Feb. 15/ at the Druids' Hall, Worcester street. 'Xhe principal matters which occupied attention were :— The Knights of Labour Parliamentary platform, a local advanced Liberal newspaper, and the Queensland floods. On the last-named matter it was resolved to express sympathy for the sufferers, and to put this into practical shape by starting a relief fund, and soliciting subscriptions. The Secretary was instructed to embody this in his report, and to request the editors of the morning papers to allow subscription lists to lie on their business counters. The proceedings terminated in the usual form. Baptist Tabernacle. — At the annual meeting of the congregation connected with the Christchurch Tabernacle last evening, there was a good attendance. Pastor Birch presided. Messrs S. E. Ingold, Eaton, Sorrell, Martin and others presented their several repbrtß connected with the various institutions attached to the Tabernacle, each bearing witness to the eminently satisfactory condition of the church., The officers for the ensuing year were elected. During the past year a large -increase in the membership of the congregation was reported. Speaking of missionary work, Pastor Birch mentioned what was being done in connection with the Chinese residents of Christchurch by members of the Baptist denomination, and spoke at considerable length on the self-sacrifice of a number of the members of the congregation in volunteering to go as missionaries to foreign neldb. Special. votes of thanks were passed to Messrs Olney, SorrelL and others. A very pleasant meeting was closed in the usual way. The Premier Building, Loan and Investment Society of Ltttelton (Permanent).— The fifth annual meeting of this Society was held at the office, Canterbury street, on Wednesday evening. There was a fair attendance ot shareholders. Mr Gifford was voted to the chair. The Directors' report and the balance-sheet for the year ending. Dec. 31, 1892, were read by the Secretary, and on the motion of the Chairman were unanimously adopted. The Directors in their report showed that a large amount of business had been done, and that the securities were all first-class. They recommended " That a dividend of 7 per cent, as per table in Eule 20, be added to B shares." The balance-sheet showed receipts £2250, i expenditure £2600. The principal items were— Advances £1285, deposits repaid and interest £159, B shares withdrawn £700, management expenses £88, the amount of overdraft £280, liabilities £3442, assets £3953. 'Messrs G. A. Lewin, T. C. Field and H. N.Hiskens were elected Directors, and Mr R. W. Arnold was re-elected Shareholders' Auditor. Votes of thanks were passed to the Chairman and Board of Directors, to the retiring Director (Mr H. Field), to the Auditors and to the Secretary for their labours in connection with 'the Society. At a meeting of Directors subsequently held Mr J. T. Gifford waa re-elected Chairman for the ensuing year.
