The Canterbury Athletic Representatives.

'• — -_ The representatives of the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Ciub who competed at the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association's Annual Championship Meeting at Wellington on Saturday laat, returned by the Tekapo yesterday afternoon. They were met at ; the Christchurch railway Btation by Mr .C. Hood Williams, President ; and Mr H. S. Batchelor, Hon Secretary, and several members of the Club and athletic enthusiasts. A four-in-hand . drag waß waiting outside the station, and the team was driven to Warner's Hotel, where the President proposed the health of the team. He said that this was the third occasion within the last four years on which the Canterbury Club had won the ChampionBhip banner. The recent meeting showed how essential it was in the choosing of a team to Belect athletes who would always " run it out," and the thanks of the Ciub were due to the Selection Committee, to the Secretary and to Mr Cuff for the manner in which they had performed their taßk. Had the Canterbury representatives not "run it out" in e?ery race, Canterbury would undoubtedly have lost the banner, and it therefore followed that a large measure of praise was due to the runneraup in the team. The result of the 440yd8 Hurdleß was one of which they might feel juatly proud. In this race Matson, Moir and Beadel were first, second and third, all of them beating the standard time by about a second, and making the requisite number of points to secure for Canterbury the championship banner for the present year. After referring to the individual performances of the team, Mr Williamß said he thought that not only the Club, but the whole of Canterbury might feel proud that it could, produco athletes who wore able to win the champion banner three times out of four, and he felt sure that they would uphold the i honour of Canterbury in the champion--1 ship meetings in the future. In conclusion he aaked for cheers for the winning team, and for the runners-up—the Wellington team. The cheerß were heartily given, and the toast proposed by the President waß drunk with muaical honours. Mr L. A. Cuff, Hon. Secretary of tho New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, hftvinpr addressed those present, the. toast waa responded to by Mr J. F. Gtierson, the Association's representative at the championship meeting, Mr E. E, Webb and Mr H. JV. Postlethwaitc, of Timaru. !
