KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ÜB'jal fortnightly meeting of thia Council was held on Tuesday night ; present — the Mayor, and Councillors '■ Weston, Stanton, Hopkins, Brighting, ' Bugg, Butt, Lissauian and Evans. j A letter was read from the Secretary of j the Agricultural Society, asking the ; Council to appoint a public holiday for the purpose of planting trees. The letter ; was, after some discussion, ordered to be received. The Surveyor reported that the levels of Sewell street required to be defined. Pome ' of the protective worlrs required repairs, owing to cattle being at large; that due notice should be served on burgesEes to provide proper crossings over footpaths, and if this were not attended to that the Council should do the necessary work and charge the owners; ako, that tenders : should be invited for horse, cart and driver ; for a fortnight. The report was adopted. ; Councillor Weston reported, for the j Finance Committee, the receipts for the past fortnight to be .£23 19s. General account debit balance £480 lis 10d, loan , account credit balance .£6O 15s ; and re- j commended payment of account* amount- ; ing to £103 IGa 4d. The report was j adopted. Applications for the position of j Caretaker of the Public Cemetery w»>re j . opened and Mr John Lister was appointed, j j Councillor Evans pointed out that some i i valuable ornamental trees had been re- j I moved from the Cemetery. The matter ; J was referred to the Cometery Cominittoe j • with power to act. i j Councillor Butt called attention to the ' j state of Dudley's drain. In soma places I the sides had slipped in, obstructing the i flow of water. It was resolved — "That the J Clerk write to each owner of land through • ! which the drain flows, asking them to give | j the Council permission to clean out the i j Eame." ! The Clerk reported that he had looked j j through the records of the Council, and the I j weight of evidence went to prove that j I the Council was the proper custodian of !' Dobson's map. On the motion of Councillor Butt, seconded by Councillor Lissaman, it was resolved — "That the Cleric j make a tracing of the map for the use of the j i Eyreton Eoad Board at a cost of £2 2s, tha i Council to bear half the expense." Kespect- [ ing the North Road Reserve, the opinion J of Mr M. Nalder, solicitor to the Council, was read, and it was resolved—" That the Mayor communicate with the member for the district, with a view to getting such a title to the same as would enable the Council to let the reserve on an improving lease." Mr J. L. Wilson applied for a transfer of the Drill Hall license from Mr Burnip to himself, and also that in future the rate should be reduced. It was resolved that no reduction should be made ; the transfer ! of license was agreed to. I The meeting then terminated.
