■ o The ordinary monthly meeting of the East Oxford School Committee was held on Thursday evening; present — Mr A. Stubbs (Chairman), Messrs Aldridge, Mitchell and Sharpe. Correspondence was then read and dealt with:— From the Bey E. F. Garbett, apologising for his absence, and stating that he had given his sanction to the school being closed at an earlier date than that fixed upon by the Committee. From Mis 3 Cooper, stating tbat since her last letter to the Committee she had had a relapse, and resigning her position as assistant mistress. On the motion of Mr Aldridge, seconded by Mr Mitchell, the resignation was accepted with regret. From Mr Petrie, resigning his position as member of the School Committee. The resignation was accepted. From Mr Byder, head master, enclosing a certificate from Dr Weld as to ill health, and stating tbat the doctor had advised him to have a month's complete rest. The matter was remitted to the Board of Education. Mr Aldridge moved and Mr Mitchell seconded— " That the holidays be extended for a week, and that the Secretary write to the Board of Education to send a substitute to take Mr Byder'e place." Mr Sharpe moved as an amendment — "That the Board be requested to Bend a substitute to take Mr Byder's place, and that the school be reopened at the time previously fixed upon by the Committee." The amendment lapsed for want of a seconder, and the motion was declared carried. It was resolved— •" That the Secretary write to the Board of Education and ascertain if the acting-aesistant mistress would be entitled to receive her salary for this month, she having gone away without leave of absence." In reference to Misa Cooper's resignation it was resolved — "That the Secretary write to the Board of Education and request that someone be sent up to temporarily undertake the duties nntil an assistant mistress j is permanently appointed." Mr fcharpe asked, on whose authority the school had been closed three days before the time fixed upon by the Committee. The Chairman stated that if the school had { not been closed Miss Buchanan would not j have been able to reach her home by ; Christmas Day, and he believed that the Secretary had gone round and asked the ' members for their approval. Mr Sharpe ! did not consider the fact of closing the school a day or two sooner was of much moment, but if the resolutions duly passed , by the Committee were to be upset in this manner, it was of no use for them to meet there at all. They might just as well do j all the business outside. ' In consideration of the amount of work 1 done by the Secretary during the laßt : quarter, it wasdecidel to raise his salary , [to £6. ' | i —
