A Buit, -which involves the question of the right of title of the Earl of Berkeley, has been decided in favour of the present holder. PARNELL AND O'SHEA. It having baen stated that Captain O'Shea had at various times been under pecuniary ob'igations to Mr Parnell, he now gives emphatic denial to the assertions. EASTING. Jacques, who finished a forty- two days' fast in August last, has undertaken the task of a fifty days' fast being carried out at the Aquarium, Westminster. METHODIST CONFERENCE. The Methodist Conference has passed a resolution protesting against the intrusion in public life of men guilty of flagrant immorality. SPURG-EON. The latest bulletins respecting the health of the Rev C. H. Spurgeon state that it fluctuates a good deal. DR DALE. Dr Dale, President of the Congregational Union, is recovering from his serious illness. MONTE CARLO. An Englishman has won £20,000 at roulette at Monte Carlo, and in order to prevent temptation to continue the gambling, has remitted the amount won to England. THE CHILIAN REVOLT. LISBON, August 1. After many difficulties with foreign Consuls, the Chilian Government cruiser Errazuris has left port. It is reported that a rebel cruiser is waiting for her in the Bay of Biscay, and will probably attempt to prevent her rendering assistance to President Balmaceda's fleet. THE CANADIAN SCANDAL. OTTAWA, August 1. Before the Corrupt Practices Committee to-day, Peters, a contractor, produced a letter signed by Sir H. langevin, formerly Minister for Public Works, ia -which the latter reminds Peters of a promise made to contribute towards his election expenses. Peters alleges that he gave Sir H. Langevin the sum of lOOOdol. DOM PEDRO. PARIS, August 1. Dom Pedro, the dethroned King of Brazil, continues in a weak slate of health. A SHARP SKIRMISH. MASSOWAH, August 1. The Somali tribe made an attack on the Italian and Arab garrison at Athol, but were repulsed. The loss on each side was thirty killed. A TEST CASE. BRISBANE, August 2. An important point will shortly be tried in the Courts here. The Union Mortgage and Agency Company has declined to pay duty on its assets, representing the money of investors outside the Colony, and consequently the Government has caused to be served on the Company a writ to enforce them. As all other Companies are taking a similar stand, the case may Jbe regarded as a test.
