The Star. THURSDAY, JUNE 11, 1891. Racing Conference.
The delegates of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club will submit several important propositions to the meeting of the Racing Conference to be held in Wellington during the forthcoming session of Parliament. The proposal to fix the minimum distance for steeplechases and hurdle raceß at two miles should meet with general approval. During the last year or two there has been a tendency to reduce the distances for these events, with the result, we think, that the character of the horses has suffered. "We do not believe in the extremely long courses— they are relics of barbarism —but mile and a half steeplechases and mile and a quarter hurdle races, are even worse. They do nothing for the theoretical objects of racing, and largely increase the dangers of a popular branch of the sport. The incorporation of the Bules of the Totalisator in the Bules of Racing must come sooner or later— the sooner the better — but the proposal to retain all the fractions and the money invested on scratched horses will not, we hope, be accepted by the Conference.
