Christchurch Horticultural Society.
« The annual meeting of the Christchurch Horticultural Society waß held at the rooms of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association at 8 p.m. yesterday. There was an attendance of about twentyeight members, the Hon E. C. J. Stevens, President of the Society, occupying the chair. The Secretary of the Society, Mr Thomas Gordon, read the annual report, which congratulated the members on the satisfactory condition of the Society. The past year had been on the whole fairly successful, the previous high standard of the various shows had been fully maintained, the only exception beiug the spring show in November, which was a comparative failure. The Chrysanthemum and Fruit Show undoubtedly was the finest ever held in Christchurcb. TBe best thanks of the Society were due to those exhibitors who sent forward such good stands of pot plants, cut flowers and fruit,
&c, for exhibition, the judges awarding no Icbs than thirty very highly commended, forty highly commended and twenty commended certificates. It was gratifying to notice the excellent fruit Bent in from Ashburton, Woodbury and Greendale. The accounts showed that the credit balance brought forward from last year was £1 Is 6d, subscriptions received .£ll3 Bs, special prizes £31 153, advertising in schedule £1 10 a, sundries £2 15s 9d. Eeceipta at shows as follow : — Bulb Show £18 93 Gd, November show £24 7b, Rose Show .£2O 3s 6d, Autumn Show £9 193, Chrysanthemum Show £1G 11s 6d. The expenditure items were : — General expenditure, £80 0s 2d ; cost of shows, including prize money, Bulb Show JS33 6s lid, November Show £41 5s lOd, Eose Show £30 11s 7d, Autumn Show £53 183 2d, Chrysanthemum Show £60 7s, carrying forward a credit balance of £3 11s Id. On the motion of the Pre&ident.seconded by Mr J. G. Davis, the report andbalancesheefc were adopted. On the motion of Mr H. R. "Webb, the Hon E. C. J. Sfcevena was re-elected to the office of President. Mr Stevens duly acknowledged the compliment, but said that he would be glad to see fresh blood introduced into the principal positions in the Society. Messrs A. Carrick, A. E. G. Rhodes, M.H.R., P. Cunningham and H. R. Webb were elected Vice-Presidents. The following Committee was elected : — Mflßßra Ffitch, J. G. Davis, Beumelbarg, Donald, Guntrip, Cant, Lawrence, H. O. D. Meares, Brooking, Evans, F. C. East and Thomas Abbott. Messrß S. Anstey and Thomas Gordon were unanimously re-elected to the positions of Hon Treasurer and Secretary respectively. Messrs A. Carrick and B. E. M. Evans were re-elected Auditors 1 A motion by Mr BeUinelburg — "That Eule 15 be altered to read as follows : — That there should be two classes at each show, an open class and an amateur class 5 and that no competitor be allowed to compete in more than one class at one show "—was carried after some discussion. A discussion arose as to the number of shows to be held by the Society during the year. Mr Meares moved — " That the Committee be recommended to consider the advisability of amalgamating the November and Rose Shows ; " and the motion was carried. Votes of thanks to the retiring officers and the Chairman terminated the proceedings. The following chrysanthemums were exhibited during the evening : — Cloth of Gold, Illustration, Putney George, Alpheua Bar by, Madame d Augiuer and Perpetual.
