SERIOUS CHARGES.
An Orphans' Treasurer. [Per Fbess association.! AUCKLAND, Jan. 21. At the Police Court to-day Mark Eawlings, on remand, appeared to answer a charge of having stolen certain moneys belonging to the Parnell Orphan Home. Mr Williameon, the prosecuting solicitor, said he proposed to withdraw the information as fir->t laid, which charged accused with simple larceny, and substitute another. It appeared that Bawlings had a beneficial interest in this money, consequently the charge had been varied. Accordingly, five or six other charges would be made, charging accused with having misappropriated various funds connected with the Orphans' Home, of which he was Treasurer. He would also be charged with having misappropriated a cheque given him to pay for certain goods. Two further charges will be laid respecting the Bank accounts of the children attached to the Home, who paid in a portion of their wages with the understanding that the accused would place it to their credit. Thiß had not been done. Eawlings acted as Treasurer in an honorary capacity for many years. As far a3 iB ascertained the deficiency is JU3OO or i 51400. Evidence is now being heard to support the charges.
