The Eight Hours System.
Messrs W. Houston (President of the Mill Employees' Association) and F. J. Bidmeade (of the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council) have returned from their miasion to the South, undertaken to ad- . vocate the adoption o£ the eight hours Byatem among flour-mill owners. They 1 saw nearly all the mill-owners in . Canterbury, Otago and Southland. r None of these raised any insurmountable objection to the introduction of the system, ' and it ia expected that, in a few weeks 3 time, arrangements will be made for all the mill-workers to work eight houre per day. Some of the mills have already adopted the 1 system. The deputation were uniformally b received with courtesy by the employers, many of whom expressed their strong approval of the movement. It is expected that a conference will be held shortly between the representatives of the millowners and the employees, to fix a time when the whole of the flour mills in the j; Colony will be worked on the eight hours* system.
