The Star. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1890. The Christchurch Bands.
We heartily congratulate the Committees of the Bands Contest and Art Union on the remarkable success that has attended their plucky effort to adjust satisfactorily their balance-sheet. As we have had occasion to state previously, the Band Contest, however praiseworthy from a musical standpoint, was a very pronounced financial failure. In fact its result was a deficit to the alarming amount of some £130. Such unlooked for and totally unmerited treatment by the public, for whose pleasure the Bands have so frequently and generously catered, was enough to take all heart out of those who had made themselves responsible for the expenses of the contest. But it did nothing of the kind. On the contrary it simply acted as a spur to them to make a combined effort for the liquidation of the apparently overwhelming debt. They organised an Art Union, a scheme which when industriously worked out generally realises something to the good. Their Art Union was not allowed to be a mere flash in the pan. It wa3 indefatigably pushed, and no means likely to make it a success were neglected. The consequence is that we were yesterday able to record the total extinction of the heavy burden of debt, and a handsome credit balance to be divided amongst the bands. We cannot but agree with the meeting held on Saturday that tangible recognition ought to be made of the services rendered to the cause by the Honorary Secretary, Mr William Mansell. In perfect keeping with his unpretentious hard work, that gentleman refused at first to accept any honorarium, but we are very glad that the meeting would not yield to the reluctance of his native modesty. Such patient perseverance as his could not be allowed to go unrecognised, and a mere vote of thanks would have been totally inadequate to express the gratitude of tbo3e whom he had done bo much to extricate from a most unpleasant position. The substantial testimonial he received will not be without its effect as an encouragement to otherß to imitate his example.
