Mr J. H. Hopkins.
Amidst the approaching festivities, there will be one sad heart in Canterbury. By an unexpected disaster Mr J. H. Hopkins is no longer a member of the Christchurch Drainage Board, and there is the sound of j music and dancing in the tents of Israel in consequence. Mr Hopkins is a man of | law. To him law and litigation are the chief joys of life. No greyhound ever followed the scent more keenly than does ' the magnate of Woolston follow a law point. He recently brought an action against the Board, of which he has hitherto been a member. Prior to hia advent on the Board, things had gone wrong. But Mr Hopkins, like a second ' Cresar, came, saw, and conquered. But scarcely had he recovered from the intoxication of his triumph, when the hour of his reverse came. Mr Hopkins' time of service on the Board had expired. He was nominated; but, alack and alas! his own law was weak on this occasion; his nomination was thrown out as informal, and he was asked , to wait for the next vacancy ! Now, the victor ia sad at heart. He has gathered his mantle around him, and the Drainage Board will go on its way rejoicing. Ab the members meet each other, they whisper, " We shall meet, but we shall miss him, there will be one vacant chair," and so on. Meantime the Drainage Board officials look forward with special delight to j Christmas of 1890. Their arch-enemy has j fallen— unless, indeed (dreadful thought) : he tests in another lawsuit the alleged informality in his nomination ! :
Mr J. H. Hopkins.
