INQUEST AT RAKAIA.
An inquest was held at Miller's Hotel, South Eakaia, on Sunday, before Mr L. Oxley, and a jury of six, with Mr Dowley as foreman, touching the death of Albert Charles Carpenter. James Withell gave evidence that on Sunday, Dec. 14, he, with the deceased and Walter Hartnell, went to bathe in the river near Lavington. Deceased undressed first and went into the water. Saw deceased suddenly go backward into deep water, where there was a whirlpool, canrecl by two streams meeting just below. Deceased was turned about in the whirlpool and then carried down one of the diraaius. Noticed him for about one hun:u<-d yarda struggling. Thought he was Hwiuirxnnjf. Witness could give no assistance, «V 5 the water ran so swiftly. Gave information to Mrs Hartnell and then to the uinnager, Mr Smith, at Eakaia. Deceased told witness that he had bathed in the fcame piace the week before. Could not auy if deceased could Bwim. G. H. Evans, one of the Acton shepherds, gave evidence as to Beeing the body on Saturday morning, as already reported, some seventy yards from the bank, and being unable to cross, owing to riding a young horse, he gave information to Mr Story, at the station, who took it to the township. George Shellock, poundkeeper, and Dr Cordner also gave evidence. The Jury returned a verdict of "Accidentally drowned whilst bathing in the Eakaia river." DUNBDIN, Dec. 22. Julia Moore, aged six years, died suddenly yesterday at her parents' residence. The child was taken ill after eating f »??. fruit and had been vomiting, after .■■;.:•;■: tko ank rapidly. '■
