Kaiapoi Regatta. — The next meeting of the Committee will take place on Thursday night, at Burnip's Hotel. Opening op Parliament. —It is rumoured that Parliament will probably be called together about the middle of January. Conscience Monet.— The Colonial Treasurer acknowledges the receipt, on Nov. 24, of a ten shilling duty stamp, attached to a slip of paper with the word " Restitution " written thereon. The Unemployed.— His Worship thi Mayor received a telegram from Government this morning, stating that the Premier was making enquiries, and would telegraph again later in the day. " Union " Almanac. — The "Union" Almanac for 1891 is now published. It contains a large amount of useful information, methodically arranged, and brought as near aa possible up to date; and its price is made to suit the times. Municipal Elections. — It is officially stated that Messrs J. A. Bird and Kalph Levoi have withdrawn from the contest for the Xorth-west ward election, and that Mr E. W. Humphreys has been nominated. Mr Humphreys' reply to the ratepayers' requisition is advertised in this issue. Fatal Accident. — Inspector Pender received a telegram this morning, stating that a girl, named Julia Lelievre, of Gough's B*y, had been thrown from her horse and killed yesterday, and an iiiquest would be held to-day. Accident. —Mr Beck, packing - case maker, of Sydenham, had his right hand severely lacerated yesterday by a circular saw at his factory. He was taken to the Hospital, where it was found necessary to amputate the thumb and first finger. Ministerial.— The Hon K. C. J. Stevens leaves to-night for Wellington, where be will attend the meeting of the Cabinet called for Friday. Sir John Hall was in town to-day, and it was rumoured that he would probably accompany Mr Stevens. Alteration op Licensing Districts. — In the Gazette of Dec. 4 will be found the alterations in the boundaries of the licensing districts of Avon, Lincoln and Little River, which are to come into force on the first day of next month. Richmond Ward also is declared an ordinary licensing district. Doll Show. — In connection with the Doll Show at Trinity Hall, the name of the prize taker at the Cake and Apron Fair in the fancy class, and for the best doll in the show, should have been printed Mrs T. Cool instead of Mrs Coule. Athletic Prize. — The Canterbury Athletic Club have received a handsome gift from Mr P. Cunningham, in the shape of a small copy of the famous Elkinpton shield. This handsome trophy was purchased at Mr Gundersen's, and is a valuable addition to the Club's collection of trophies. Supreme Court.— The case of Anderson v. Edwards was resumed before Mr Justice Denniston and a special jury at 10.30 a.m. to-day. The hearing of evidence for the plaintiff was resumed. The whole of the morning sitting was occupied with one witness, Mr Shaw, of Shaw, Robinson and Co., formerly manager of the Manchester Department for Messrs Edwards, Bennett and Co., "who was examined by Mr Joynt, and cross-examined by Mr Harper. Lyttelton GarrißON Band.— This band, under the leadership of Mr D. M'lHllop, will perform the following programme at the corner of Norwich Quay and Oxford street, to-morrow evening (weather permitting), commencing at eight o'clock :— Quick march, "Little Brunswick," John Jubb; valse, "Dorothy," P. Bncalossi; selection, "Roberto II Diavolo," Meyerbeer ; schottische, "Sunbeams," Oscar Bennett; polka, "Fusillade," H. Round; valse, " Mikado," Sir A. Sullivan ; fantasia, "La Diva,"- Charles Richards; quadrille, " Dorothy," P. Bucalosßi ; fantasia, " O'er Land and Sea," E. Newton ; march, " Star of the Brave," R. Smith; finale, "God Save the Queen." The Black Swans. — The pair of swans and five cygnets presented to the city by Mr J. T. Matson are evidently appreciating their new home, though it is doubtful if they will remain near the island without some special inducement at first. Early this morning they had a cruise down the river as far as the Barbadoes street bridge, and one of Mr Matson's employees went down to fetch them up to their island home. A little enticement in the shape of food auch as they like would do much to remove any restlessness, and it is the least that the citizens can do, after receiving so valuable a gift, to see that they are carefully guarded and remain an ornament to the river. Sale op Pictures. — The sale of pictures, which will be held by Messrs J. Bowman and Son to-morrow afternoon, affords to lovers of art an opportunity of increasing their collections, of which they Bhould not neglect to avail themselves. The pictures are now on view at Messrs Bowman and Son'B rooms, in Hereford street. They number about one hundred and fifty, and the majority were shown at the recent exhibitions of the Christchurch and Dunedin Art Societies. In all, fifty-five of our best known artistaarerepresented. Among others the names of Messrs C. D. Barraud, C. Bloomfield, E. Clark, G. F. Fodor, E. A. Gill, W. M.Gibb, J. Gully, H. G. Lloyd, J. M. Madden, J. D. Perrett, E. W. Payton and AY. K. Sprott may be mentioned as being represented by some of their happiest efforts. The sale will commence at two o'clock, and, as with very few exceptions, the pictures will be sold without reserve, the art loving public should not fail to be present. The Key G. H. Bradbury 13 announced to deliver his popular lecture on Stanley's Darkest Africa in the Congregational Church, Ferry road, on Thursday ovening. Mr Bradbnry has made himself a name hare as a lecturer, and that faot, coupled with tho popularity of the subject, should draw together a good audionce.
