Close of the Strike.
In business matters during the week the chief interest haa centred in the close of the strike. The end has been foreseen for some little time, and now that it has come to pass let us hope the usual channels of trade will not be disturbed in a like manner for many a day to come. Householders and proprietors of factories who have been paying high rates for fuel lately will be glad when the expected supplies of coal begin to arrive. With the completion of the repairs to the machinery at the Westporfc mine, and the reopening of the other pits on the Coast now being arranged, that wished-for event should take place very shortly. To all appearance the market will also be supplied with stocks of Newcastle coal at an earlier period than was anticipated. It is to be regretted, for the sake of the Lyttelton labourers, that, when it has been decided to resume work, employment of this description, owing to the between season, should be so scarce. However, with the near approach of the delivery of the wool, coal arrivals, and a general resumption of the interprovincial and intercolonial trade, it is to be hoped there will be a gradual absorption of all the hands seeking engagement.
