The Trades' Council have received a formal letter announcing the withdrawal of the Mercantile Marine Officers* Association. The letter states that the Association have no longer any desire to remain affiliated with the Trades' Council, as they recognise they are only a stumbling block to a peaceful settlement of the present labour difficulty.

The report that the men intended to take a ballot as to resuming is unfounded. They are firm in their determination to fight it out to the bitter end. The Unionists admit there' is no chance of work for them this year, bat consider things are shaping in their favour. They have received a donation of £100 from t.be Amalgamated Miners' Association of Australasia. The Labour leaders in this district have received no instructions to resume work. [Special to the " Star."] WELLINGTON, Nov. 1. The wharf labourers and stevedores' men here return to work where they can get it on Monday. The seamen and firemen will rot resume work for a few daya yet. DUNEDIN, Nov. 1. The wharf labourers have decided to resume work in a body. The seamen, are still inclined to remain out.
