A Conciliation Conference.
A CONSERVATIVE NEWSPAPER ADVOCATES IT. It is gratifying to find (says the Sydney Morning Herald of Sept. 13), from the course adopted yesterday by the conference of the representatives of the labour party to secure an interview between some delegates of their body and an equal number from the conference of the employers, that the suggestion to seize the opportunity to bring the two parties into joint conference has been adopted. We may take this as a practical recognition of the growing feeling that some steps should be taken by the two parties to the quarrel to bring about an early settlement. The information we published yesterday with regard to the feeling on the subject in Melbourne showed that a similar suggestion had also been madeinthesonthern capital. There it has been embodied in a proposal to arrange a truce for three months between the two parties, which would at once permit of the immediate resumption of work, band prepare the way to measures for bringing abont by conciliatory means a permanent settlement of the quarrel. We need not say with what pleasure we should welcome such a beginning of the work of reconciliation. After the experience we have had of the waste, and loss, and social danger, and industrial disorganisation caused by the strike, it is difficult to believe, if a truco were once effected so as to allow of the resumption of work, that either side would consent under any pressure lesß than that of necessity to return to a condition of war. i .
