SUPREME COURT.

[PER PrWSS ABBOOIATION.] AUCKLAND, June 7. ■A nice legal point was raised yesterday in the trial of Edmund George, for criminally assaulting a girl under fourteen. The defence waa that he had reasonable grounds for believing her to be over fourteen. The Jury returned a verdict of " Guilty," but the Judge disagreed. Mr Tole, for the defence, urged that the Judge, as the Court, could override the Jury's verdict, under the proviso of last year's Acb in regard to reasonable belief, which says : " If, in the opinion of the Court or Jury, prisoner, &c." Mr Justice Conolly reserved the point for tho Court of Appeal. WELLINGTON, June 7. In the Supreme Court George Hill, on a charge of obtaining indecent literature for distribution, was acquitted on the technical grounds that a similar charge against him had already been heard and dismissed by a Magistrate. A charge of assault against a native named Tuhora will be taken on Monday, and is expected to occupy two days. Mr P. J; M'Aliater, Deputy-Registrar of the Supreme Court, Dunedin, shortly resigns, owing to ill-health. His successor haß not yet been appointed.
