Scholarship Examinations.

At yesterday's meeting of the Education Board, the following letter was read reportingon the recent scholarship examinations^ —

"Christchurch, Jan. 23, 1890,

" The Chairman Board of Education

" Sir, — I have the honour, on behalf of the Inspectors and myself, to report that we have completed the annual examinations for scholarships in Classes A and B, which, on thiß occasion, in pursuance of a resolution passed by the Board, was held on Dec. 19 and 20, instead of as heretofore in the month of April. " The number of candidates was one hundred and thirty. Sixty-eight (fortyfiveboysand twenty-three girls) in Class A, and sixty-two (forty-four boys and eighteen girls) in Class B. The appended tables showed the marks gained by each candidate in each subject. The five who stand first in Class A are Isaac Newton, „ Adele Peebles, Jessie Picken, Mary Beare, all of Sydenham school; and Ernest Cull, of the West Christchurch. Tho firat five in Class B are James Beid and Thomas Boberts, of Christchurch West ; Margaret Olliver and George Pickles, of Christchurch East ; and Arthur Sims, of Longbeach. We recommend that the five scholarships available for Classes A and B respectively be awarded to the ten candidates named, and that the two unappropriated scholarships, open -to candidates in either A or B, according to merit, be given to Bichard Morgan, of Papanui, whose marks are exactly equal to those of E. Cull, and to David Morgan, of Christchurch We3t, who ia only one mark below. Both these candidates axe in Class A. — I have, &c., "J. T. Coijboenb-Vebi.." PUPIL TEACHERS' *fiXAKINATION.
