Mining News.

o [Pee Pbess Association.! AUCKLAND, Nov. 27. An assay o£ samples of quartz from Puhipuhi has been made by Mr D. R. Galbraith, -who states that the quartz ia argentiferous, and contains 9140z lodwt of silver per ton of 2240 pounds. There are only traces of gold present. Mr R. Hobba has gone toWhangarei,«iroute for the new field. He states that he is surprised to learn that any pereons enterprising enough to go and inspect the new discovery are to bo prosecuted. Ec is in communication with the Government as to the course to be adopted in regard to the subject. A great amount of mystery has been observed, even relative to the location of the discovery itself; but according to tho Herald the prospectors have operated on three reefs. One is called the Silver reef, and it was from this that the result of 1740z of silver and 13oz of gold was obtained. This was from a one ton trial from a reef carrying ore for a width of 2&ft. Other samples were sent from other reefs, and experts at Waiorongoinai pronounced them to be free milling ore. The Silver reef is really the only ODe that has been tested effectively. In reply to an application made to him, Mr Humphreys, Conimissioner of Crown Lands, Btated that no persons except four had permission or will be allowed to enter tho Puhipuhi forest to search for minerals. Tho preservation of the timber was a great consideration, and the Government required larger and moro satisfactory tests before opening the field. This decision has not been received with satisfaction.
