Local Government.
Ever since the-abolition of the Provinces the people -of Uew Zealand have been hankering for a method of repairing- theirmistake. The County -Council, the Road Board,.the Harbour Board, the Charitable Board, the Municipal Board, the Town Board, are very good timbers in their own way, but as planks of the Ship of -'State they are more or less rotten. That is the fact which fifteen years of history- has -given us. Very early in the period thfecryresoundedthroughout the land, "Why -did we abolish th» good government we had, instead of using it as a base for reform P" Theiocal Government Committee of the Representatives has made a report which in some respects echoes the public outcry. The report gives more definite shape to what has hitherfcoboenmerelyxough-hewn by general desire. It takea us into the region of provincial bodies having legislative functions enjoying a defined financial existence, and amenable to a public opinion which they both understand and respect. There is the region open to anyone aspiring to be a constitutional reformer to win bis spurs in. " Advance young New Zealand ! The Committee show you the way by advising the setting up of a Committee again next year to consider the subject."
