Avon Rowing Clnb.

♦ ANNUAL MEETINa The animal meeting of the Avoa Bowing Club was held at the Star and Garter Hotel at eight o'clock hist night. The inclemency of the weather made the attendance smaller than usual. The Captain of the Club,. Mr W. Lamb, occupied the ohair. The Secretary, Mr J. Shea, read the annual report, aa follows: — "Your Committee in presenting the eighth annual report can once more congratulate members on the ever-increasing prosperity of the Club. Although the past Beason has been one of very heavy expenditure, yet your Committee think that the outlay in several instances was greatly needed, and will help considerably to give the Club a firmer footing, and secure to members many advantages that were hitherto denied them. There has been a Blight increase in the number of members during the past season, the roll now showing fifty-five active and non-aetive, seven honorary, and two life members, and this is one of the things we should like to Bee receive greater attention, as the power of advancing the Club's position rests entirely in members' bands. Tour Committee are desirous of seeing more interest shown, and one and all strive their utmost to procure new members, as it ia altogether impossible for the Club to improve, if the membership does not increase. During the season, two double-sculling stumps were purchased of Mr Bees, bringing the Club's fleet up to fourteen boats. This, we think, will suffice for the coming season ; also, two new sets of oars were purchased to replace thoee that had been cast aside. The Club was represented at the different local regattas, but our share of success was none too large. Although some of the Club's crews were unfortunate in loßing what should have been wins, yet they must not allow ii to dishearten them in any way, but try and bear the Club's colours first past the post during the coming season, tor, no matter how great the odds may seem, there is always a chance of winning. This was beautifully illustrated, a weeago to-day. Now, to row with any chance of success, members must pay the strictest attention to their training, for it ia utterly useless for members to compete when in a half-trained condition. As we are seriously .handicapped by the lack of an efficient coach, every endeavour will be made to fill this long-felt want. The Club races on the whole were very successful, the different events being closely contested, and were the means of producing several new representatives for the Club at regattas. Our annual smoke concert was held in the ahed on May 22, and proved an un- | doubted success, i his, in a measure, was largely due to the unremitting attention of the gentleman. in whose hands the neces- ■' sary arrangements were left. By the balance-sheet you will notice that the receipts for the year were £136 11s Id, and the expenditure .£135 17s 4d, leaving the sum of 13s 9d to our credit, and the assets exceed the liabilities by £175. In conclusion, the thanks of the Club are due to Mesßrs A. Loughrey, M JS.B., Eden George, A. J. White, J. G. Kuddenklau, and B. Petersen and Co. for assistance rendered during the past, and promised for next, season." The balance-Bheet, the substance of which is given in the report, was also read. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The resignation of three members were accepted with regret. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: — President, Mr James Freeman; Vice- Presidents, Messrs A. Loughrey, M.H.E., W. B. Perceval, M.H.E., H. Crooks, J. Toovey, E. George and T. G. Pascoe ; Captain, Mr W. Lamb ; Vice-Captain, Mr T. Harrison; Hon Secretary, Mr P.J. Eowley; Hon Treasurer, Mr T. Harrison ; Committee, Messrs J. G. Shea, H. Wigzell, C. Bowlker, J. Cusack, A. Price, A. Hobbs, E. Hughes ; Auditors, Messrs H. Bobins and W. Baker. The meeting then considered the rules, and shortly after adjourned.
