THE AGNEWS.

VERT ANIMATED PROCEEDINGS. COMMITTED TO GAOL. [Pee Pbebb Association.] WELLINGTON, Junh 19. Agnew and his wife were charged this morning with having insufficient means of support. In reply to the charge, accused said they were the victims of a long and severe persecution, and added indignantly, "To bring auch a charge against us when we have 105 acres of our own, your Worship I" During his examination, Ser-geant-Major Morice stated that the accused were constantly hanging around the Government offices, trying to obtain redress for supposed grievances. Mr Jellicoe had very kindly agreed to provide for them for a time. The Sergeant further stated that on Saturday last he Baw them at the Police Station, and explained to them the terms of Mr Jellicoe'a offer. They would hardly listen to what he had to say, and scorned the idea of accepting the sum of £25 and their passage money, which Mr Jellicoe had offered to give them if they would leave Wellington. They seemed to be impressed with the idea that Mr Jellicoe was acting on behalf of the Government, notwithstanding witness* assurance that such was not the case, and that Mr Jellicoe was entirely disinterested. Agnew had asked for a cheque on account, but of course that was refused, and they were told that they would get nothing until they were actually on board the steamer. He explained this to the Court to show that everything possible had been done. Witness added that to his own knowledge the land they said they possessed in Otago was mortgaged far beyond its worth.
