— ; — .<>_. [FKOBI OUR OWN COBRE6PONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Sept. 21. ' PUBLIC TVOEKS DEPARTMENT. There were two sittings cf the Cabinet to-day, the principal business transacted being the consideration of the be&b method to be adopted ia the abolition of the Public Works Department. The Ministers present were the Premier and the Hons E. Mitchelson, G. Jb 1 . Bichardson, and G. j Fisher. It was resolved that the work of merging the Public Woiks Department into that of the Kailways should be carried out gradually, the task of doing so being entrusted to Mr Mitchelson. It is understood that the proposed reform will necessitate the resignation of a number of officials. No undue severity will be exercised in the mode of getting rid of those whose services are ' to be dispensed with. Wherever it is possible, openings will be found for the Public Works officials in other departments of the service.
