THE RAILWAYS.
The continuous heavy rains naturally did some damage to the railway lines, the most serious being to the northern line in the Weka Pass. The South line was interrupted all day on Saturday at the Pareora bridge, one of tho piles having been slightly displaced by the river, which was very high. The North and South express trains ran to either side of the break, and the passengers, mails, and luggage were transferred from one to the other. Yesterday communication was restored. On Saturday evening the Methven line was interrupted at Lyndhurst, where there were some eighteen inches of water on the rails. The last train from Bakaia had to return to that station. Yesterday the water subsided, end a train went through from Eakaia to Methven, so as to resume the running this morning. Information was received yesterday that a break had occurred in the Little Eiver line about seven miles from Lincoln, between Greenpark and Eabbit Island. The extent of the damage is not yet known. Yesterday, also, there was a slight break on the Oxford-Sheffield line.
