-» Heavy Floods, Considerable Damage. The boisterous weather whioh prevailed when we went to press on. Saturday morning, continued during the earlier portion of the day, but gradually ceased by noon. During theaf ternoon it rained at intervals. Owing to the lulls in the rain, the water got away in all parta of the town, and the Avon, though something about a foot higher than usual, was able to carry it off without overflowing the banks. No damage has been done in the town, though in the lower districts a considerable quantity of water is still lying. The streets in the city and many of the suburban roads have undergone a good washing. Yesterday there was a deal of water lying on the fields below the gasworks. The Ferry road drains kept that highway dry, bub the field- on either side of the road all have large quantities of water collected on them. Tht. track at the Heathcote racecourse has suffered severely from the .heavy downpour, and is said to be unfit for work. Ifc 'will require Beveral days* dry weather before it can again be usod. The Heathcote river was bank to bank in lowlying places, but no serious flooding bas occurred from it. Mr Stansell's record of the rainfall at Christchurch shows that in the twenty-four hours ending 9 a.m. on Saturday l*<_7in fell. The wind was South-east. The greater part of this rain fell after 7 p.m. on Friday, at times coming down like a waterspout. The rainfall for the twenty-four hours ending 9 a.m. yesterday was *60in, the wind being from the South-west. Between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. yesterday, *41 of an inch fell, the wind having changed to South-east. It has rained on nine days this month, on seven days from the South-west. The total rainfall this month has been _'5Gm.
