Waimakariri Harbour Board.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Waimakariri Harbour Board was held last L night; present — Messrs Moore (in the chair), Hansen, Fraser, Smethurst, and Mathews. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs > May and Oram. CORRESPONDENCE. ' The following correspondence waa read :— From the Audit Office, asking for a copy of the Board's accounts for 1887. ,- From the Marine Department, stating limitation of powers of Harbour Boards. The pilot reported that the last fresh had deepened the channel in the North branch, and on July 26 the steamer Shag reported ten feet on the bar at high water. [ Inward tonnage for July, 131 tons; out- [ ward, 117 tons. Adopted. FINANCE. [ The credit balance was £2d 2s 4d. Accounts amounting to £36 5s were passed for payment, Messrs Hansen and Fraser objecting to the rather loose manner in which the accounts were certified to. STRANDING OP THB HUON BELLE. 3 The Chairman read a report from the Press, of July 6, relative to this occurrence, and Btated that the Chairman of the Works Committee had written to the pilot asking for an explanation. He now read the pilot's reply, which ■f stated that the Press report was s not correct. There was no defect in q the signalling, and the accident to the - vessel was solely owing to sudden failure s of wind just as the tide turned, and when r there was no time to anchor. He moved—" That the I pilot'B explanation with regard to the stranding of the ketch Huon Belle be accepted as satisfactory, and that this Board regrets that the local correspondent of the Press has misrepresented the matter." Seconded by Mr Hansen and carried unanimously. miscellaneous. The Chairman said he had instructed the Secretary to proceed against Mr Gallagher for rent. He also reported the result of an interview with the Secretary of Marine re foreshores. Mr Fraser asked if the pilot had been duly appointed under the new by-laws, and the Chairman promised to attend the matter. NOTICE OF MOTION. Mr Fraser gave notice to move at nest meeting— "That the Works Committee be discharged." He complained that no reports were forthcoming on several matters referred to them. The Board then adjourned.
