PARLIAMENTARY NOTES.

o Thia Day. A VIGILANCE COMMITTEE. UNPOPULAR PROPOSALS. [from our own correspondent.} WELLINGTON, May 17. Very little is doing in the lobbies today, but there is considerable discussion in anticipation of the result of the meeting of the Opposition, which has been called for noon. It is generally believed that no action will be taken in the direction of appointing a leader of the party, but that a Vigilance Committee, comprising two or three of the leading members, will guide its fortunes. In the meantime. Government are said to be preparing a Bill for the better regulation and protection of the New Zealand oyster fisheries. There is an increased feeling of repugnance amongst members against the cloture proposals of the Government, which it is thought will be thrown out, while the remainder of the new rules of procedure will have a hard fight to get through, as the Opposition have the matter in their own hands, if they care about keeping out of the House when the motions come on.
