.. ■» CITY GUARDS. The annual meeting of the Christchurch. City Guards was held in their orderly-room yesterday evening. There was a good attendance. Captain Eishop presided, and read the balance-sheet, l -which showed the Company to be in a , good position, there being a balance of some i>l7 in the bank. Ib was stated that about .£92 had been spent in uniforms. The captain called attention to 1 the fact that not . a penny had been expended in anything but working expenses. The Company had a small balance in the bank, had paid for their uniforms, and owed no one anything. On the motion of Lieutenant Massey, 1 seconded by Lieutenant Helps, the balancesheet was adopted. Captain Bishop then referred to the retirement of Lieutenant Garnett, and the accession of Lieutenant Help 3to the Com--1 pany. He had much pleasure in handing l to Corporal Harris a marksman's badge, j tho only one won m the Company, j. Corporal Harris briefly acknowledged ■ the presentation. *•■' The following were elected the Fii-iag 1 > Committee for the ensuing year: — Lieus tenant Massey, Sergeant Ward, Corporal "Weekes, and Privates Steere and Ellis. Private M'Ginifcy urged that more encouragement should be given to young 1 shots in order to bring forward new blood ' in the company in regard to shooting. ) Captain Bishop said that he would refer [ to the subject later on. j The following were elected as the General Committee : — Captain Bishop, L'eutenants Massey and Helps, Sergeant 3 Ward, Corporal Willis, Privates F. King, 3 Lezard, M'Ginity. The same members were appointed as the Finance Committee. Corporal Weekes was unanimously reelected Secretary of the company for the ensuing year. j .Captain Bishop then presented the following members with the prizes won in the spoon matches oii the company during the year : — Sergeant Ward, Privates Ellis, A. Lezard, and F. J. King. The spoona were of silver, and bore the nionogi-am of the recipient. Private Ellis received no fewer than three spoons. / This concluded the formal business of 3 the meeting. \ The remainder of the evening was spent ,fc in a smoke concert, at which Captain £ Bishop presided, supported by Majors ', Wolfe and Francis, former officers of the company. A number of toasts were honoured, some capital songs and a very pleasant time spent by all present. CHRISTCHURCH RIFLES. The annual general meeting of the Christchurch Rifles was held in the orderly -roomi drillshed grounds, last a . night. Le Captain Bristow presented a prize t( £ Buglor J. Alston, for the best attendance ai parade during the year, he not having missed a single parade during that time. The report of the Firing Committee was a _ then presented, showing that the Company s~, had won three matches and lost four which, might be considered very satisfac tory, considering the fact that the Companj y , had been firing against such teams as th< & Christchurch. Rifle Club and the Nortt Canterbury Rifle Club. The prize-winneri in the firab class are :— Sergeant Sandford

202 points, 1 ; Corporal Scott, 189 points, 2; Corporal Breen, 153 points, 3; Lieutenant Eeynolds, 152 points, 4; LanceCorporal Twentyman, 149 points, 5. Spoon winners, first class : Sergeant Sandford, two spoons ; Lieutenant Reynolds, Corporals Scott, M'Laren, and Breen, one spoon each. Prize-winners second class: Volunteer Foster, 156 points, 1 ; Volunteer Barrett, 116 points, 2; Colour-Sergeant Peake, 82 points, 3. Spoon - winners : Volunteer Foster, three j Barrett, Peake, and Drayton, one each. Captain Bristow then handed the marksman's badge and three stars to Corporal Thompson, and the badge and two stars to Corporal Scott. On the motion of Colour- Sergeant Peake, seconded by Sergeant Bishop, it was resolved — "That the sum of £5 ba voted to the funds of the Garrison Band." A further sum of .£lO was voted to the Shooting Committee, as a fund for providing prizes during the year. It was decided to supply ammunition for practice to members at 5s per 100. The officers (ex officio), Colour-Sergeant Peake, Sergeant Cole, Corporals Scott and Bieen, Lance-Corporal Twentyman, and Private Foster were electsd a Firing Committee for the ensuing year. Captain Bristow and Private Beadle were elected Auditors, and a vote of thanks was accorded to the retiring Auditors. A hearty voto of thanks was accorded to Colour-Sergeant Peake for the painstaking way in which he has fulfilled the arduous duty of Secretary to the Company, and the meeting terminated.
