FIRE BRIGADES' DEMONSTRATION.

» . The Final Arrangements. There was a very full meeting of the Fire Brigades' Demonstration General Committee, held last evening at the Cheater Street Station. Mr W. Harris occupied the chair. The Hon Treasurer reported" that the autn of J2275 was in hand, and a cheque for .£24 3s, the private subscriptions of the - individual members of the Insurance > agencies had been received. The Chairman reported that twentyeight brigades had entered for competition from oil parts of the Colony. The difficulty of water supply had been overcome, by the ' formation of a tank and the use of the railway lire engine, granted by Mr Garstiu, to . provide the necessary pressure. THe pro- ' gramme had been revised, and prizes had > been allotted to the amount of .£2OB in cash, and .£59 8s m trophies. The following officials had been appointed: — Judgeo, Captain Mitchell (Port Chalmers), Superintendent Waterworth (Napiei), Superintendent Michel (Hokitika), Superintendent Blackwell (Kaiapoi), Ex-Cap-tain Amos (Timaru), and Ex-Superintend-ent Johnston (Rangiora). Ambulance 1 Judges : Drs..Guthrie and Irvine. Starters : Messrs H. Thomson, S. P. Andrews, and A. M. Ollivier. Timekeepers : Messrs M. Sandstein, A. Francis, H. Kohn, and A. Gundersen. Examiners of Apparatus : Captain Sinclair (Waimato), P.~M. Jolnston, and W. Barnett. Clerks of the Scales : Messrs E. C. Ashby and T. Hobbs. Clerk of Time-board: Mr J. Smythe. Field-Secretary :Mr J. Watts. Marshals on the Ground : Meesra T. Stapleton and C. Samuels. The following wore the proposed arrangements for entertaining the visiting firemen : — Sunday, church parade at the Cathedral; Monday, torchlight procession; Tuesday, boating procession on the river; Wednesday, water display >7ith the fire engines, and Friday, social gathering and -presentation ,of prizes. Lieutenant - Colonel Lean had kindly granted the use of tents for the competitors, and the Colonial Secretary had granted the Committee permission to hold an art union. The necessary grants were voted to the sub - Committees, and the report was adopted. The Secretary was instructed to write to the various bands, inviting tenders from them for the music for each day of the demonstration ; tenders to close on Friday next. It was left to the Entertainment Committee to provide for the due entertainment of the visitors. A letter was read from Mr E. W. Jones, representative of Messrs Merry weather and Sons, offering the following prizes:— One model manual fire-engine collecting box, two patent leather belts, with plated buckles aud patent leather pouches, two polished hand hatchets, ■with gun-stock handles, two silver-plated whistles in plated sheatha, for tunic, and plated chains and coat fastenings, one plated gorgefcte,' with gilt ornament, two scarf pins, two silver medals, and one bronze medal; Messrs B. T. Wheeler and Sons wrote, offering as a prize, an album o£ New Zealand views. The prizes were accepted, with a vote of hearty thanks to the donors. Mr Smith reported that forty-five prizes had been collected for the art union. . The Committee voted .£lO for 'the purchase o£ 55 additional prizes, making the number up to 100. His Worship the Mayor consented to take the chair at the social entertainment on the Friday evening. It was decided to request the proprietors of the principal places of business to close on Tuesday, Feb. 21, as also to ask the Mayor to proclaim that day a public holiday. Messrs Mears, Manning, Triggs, and Turton were appointed a Committee to wait upon the proprietors of places of business re the holiday. Messrs Mitchell and Harris were appointed as marshals for the torchlight procession. His Worship the Mayor and Meosrs Harris, Mitchell, and T. Stapleton were authorised to draw the art union, all the unsold tickets for which are to be sent in by 10 p.m. on Saturday next.
