Our London correspondent sends the following items: — A FIRE-PROOF THEATRE. A new theatre, which pretends to be perfectly fire-proof, will be opened in the Strand early next month, by Mr E. Terry. A new novel, by Miss Gertrude Warden, the authoress of " The House on the Marsh," waa published yesterday, entitled " Scheherazade ; or a London Night's Entertainment." ARCHIBALD FOUBES. Archibald Forbes continues very unwell. His condition causes his friends much anxiety. "A novelists' note-book." David Christie Murray's " Novelists' Note Book" turns out to be merely a reprint of some old newspaper articles. NEW -OMEDT. "The Barrister," the new farcical comedy, produced at Miss Melnotte'a unlucky house on Monday evening, was well received, and seems likely to run. The authors are George Manville Fenn, the novelist, and a Mr Darnley. GERMAN OCCUPATION OF SAMOA. In the House of Commons last night, in answer to Mr A. M'Arthur, Sir J. Fergusson said : — " Intelligence has been received through the Governor of New Zealand that, iv consequence of the complaints against the so-called King Malietoa by German subjects, the German Consul, with the support of a man-of-war, had deposed Malietoa and proclaimed Tamasese King of Samoa. The British and United States Cousulb had protested." KPOUTINO ITEMS. The weights for the two great autumn handicaps, the Cesarewitch and Cambridgeshire were declared last night. Bendigo is top weight in each.
