Recognition of Plucky Conduct.

A meeting, largely attended by the police from all divisions of the Metropolis, in addition to many members of the public, wa3 held at tho Holborn Town Hill, when a testimonial was presented to ex-Sergeant Barker. Sir Charles Warren presided. The testimonial, consisting of a sum of money and a marble timepiece, was given in recognition of the conduct of Barker, who, on the night of March 29, followed up two burglars whom, he had discovered | trying to break into a house in Wood- [ side Park, North Finchley, and whom |he made ■ repeated efforts to apprsI hend, notwithstanding- the serious injuries they had intiieLod upon him with an iron bar. He was left in an unconscious state on the railway, where he had pursued them, and whilst in that state was deprived of his right foot by a passing train. The money, amounting to J2622, was i contributed by a large number of persons i throughout the country; and .£6OO will be invested for the benefit of Barker and his i family. His promotion to the rank of : sergeant was made by the Home Secretary, and an honorarium of .£SO was awarded to I him, together with a pension of JE7Ba year for life. Of the .£022 the Magistrates at Bow street granted .£25 from the reward fund at their disposal, and .£25 was awarded by Mr Justice Hawkins. An artificial foot has been supplied Barker, who was warmly applauded.
