SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
An ordinary meeting of tho above Council was held last evening ; present — His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Councillors Jacques, Gledhill, Booth, Bowden, and Muffatt.. : Councillors White, Laugdown, and T. E. Taylor, the newly-elected members, took the usual declaration and their seats. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read : — From ratepayers in Colombo road, pro- ! testing against the levying of a special , rate for the purpose of defraying the cost of watering that thoroughfare ; also, a petition upon the same subject, in which the petitioners offered to subscribe small amounts for the purpos9 of having the
street watered,
The petitions were received From ratepayers at Windmill ifoad and Willow Bank, asking for the erection of a lamp at the corner of ScricMand street and j Crescent road. Referred to Lighting Committee. From Mr J. W. Smith, requesting the Council's patronage to a concert in aid of a charitable object. The request was acceded to. WORKS REPORT. The Works Committee reported as follows: — " Your Committee recommends that the request of the Spreydon Eoad Board to invite tenders for the work of constructing the footpaths and lowering the roadways in Jerrold street and Strickland street, be complied with. The Committee has considered a letter (hereto annexed) from the Chief Surveyor, respecting the dedication of the Hazeldean road between Montreal street and the Windmill road., and recominendß that the Government be requested to recognise the road as extending as far south as Mr Hewitt's northern boundary. In reference to the letter of the Riccarton Eoad Board, offering to pay one-half the cost of the proposed footpath on the northwest side of the Lincoln road, and to a letter from the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, since received, asking the Council to carry out the work, the Committee recommends that, unless the Riccarton Road Board will agree to pay tho whole cost of the work, it should not be done, the concrete channelling on the Sydenham side of the road having been done at the sole expense of this Council, and that the Agricultural and Pastoral Association be informed accordingly." The report was received and adopted. FINANCE REPORT. The Finance Committee reported as follows: — Receipts since last "meeting, i>299 3s ?d; accounts recommended for payment, .£.133 10s : debit balance at Bank (current and loan current accounts), .£528 3s sd; credit balance (interest, deposits, and draiHage rates accounts), .£822 ss ; fixed deposit, £10,000. The report was received and adopted. MISCELLANEOUS. Councillor Muffett, in accordance with notice, moved the rescinding of a resolution of the Council/passed in 1870, making the Works Committee the channel through which all orders of the Council should be given to the the Foreman of Works. The motion was seconded by Councillor Bowden pro forma. After a short discusßion, the motion was negatived. APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEES. Committees were appointed as follows : — Works — Councillors White, Gledhill, Jacques, and T. E. Taylor ; Finance — Booth, Bowden, Muffett, and Langdown ; By-Laws and Fire Prevention — Bowden, Muffett, K. M. Taylor, Booth, and White. A vote of thanks to ex-Councillor Jonea was recorded upon the minutes The Council adjourned.
