CITY COUNCIL.
The City Council held an ordinary meeting last night ; present — His Worship th n Mayor and Councillors Prudhoe, Grinned, M'Laren, Manning, Tait, Judge, Gray, Crooks, Goes, Hulbert, Scott, and Brice.
Councillors Gray, Crooks, and Judge signed the usual declaration before taking their seats.

The debit balance at the Eank was £507 ! <l 3 Bd. The .receipts since the previous meeting were -.—On general account, JJ76B •103 ; suspense account, £95 Oa 4d ; interest account, ,£lO9 83 6d ; cemetery account, £9 15s (3d. The expenditure was :— On ordinary account, £1264 IS3 lOd; loan account, £25 12s ; suspense account, £604 7s Od. I PETITION. ! A petition, was read, asking that the footpath on the south side of Bath street might be asphalted. This was referred to the Works Committee. ■ j CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read 1 — Prom the St Albans Borough Council, asking the City Council to. pay half the coat of asphalting, crossings* at Carlton place and North street. The matter was referred to the Works Committee to report upon. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The following was read : — " Your Committee has considered the application to 1 remit the rates on the Drillahed, but ' regrets the Act does not givo the Council the power to give the relief asked for, and therefore cannot recommend the Council to accede to the request." . Councillor Hulbort thought the best way would be to direct that the authorities of the Drillshed should not be sued for the rates. He would move — " That the matter be allowed to stand over."
Councillor Grinsted seconded this, and it was supported by Councillor Goss.
The amendment was carried unanimously.
QUESTIONS. ; Councillor Crooks asked if the number c-F channel-sweepers could not be increased. 1 The present . four men could not do the ' work. His Worship thought the matter should be brought before the Works Committee. NEW COMMITTEES. Tlio following were appointed the Committees : — Works and Lighting.—Councillors.Prudhoo.Tait, Goes, Manning, and Scott. Finance and Departmental. — Councillors Manning, Gray, Grinsted, Judge, and Scott. Firo Brigade— Councillors Tait, Grinsted, Judge, M'Laren, and Crooks. ; Reserves, Sanitary and Cemetery. — Councillors .Grinsted, Crooks, M'Laren, Judge, and Brico. By-lawß — Councillors Hulbort, Brice, M'Laren, Gosb, and Gray. ; The first named on each Committee were appointed the Chairmen. ■ PUBLIC BUILDINGS.
Councillor Crooks moved — "That the Works Commitfceo take the condition of all licensed buildingß into consideration without delay, with power to take immediate action."
Councillor Grinsted seconded the motion, ' which was agreed to unanimously. After dealing with several applications for licenses, the Council adjourned. I ============== i
