FIRES.

North-East Ward.

About a quarter-past six o'clock yesterday evening a stable and cart-shed in New street were burned down. The stable contained two stalls, a loose box, and hay loft, and belonged to Mr Greenslade, an employee of Mr Hopkins, butcher, who had an insurance on it of _ 50 in the Royal office. There were no horses in it at the time of the fire, and a cart and harness which were in the adjoining shed wero saved. The neighbouring property was saved by the exertions of the residents and the use of the chemical engine. The steamer Extinguisher got a couple of lines of hose from a sump in the Madras street storm-water drain to play on the fire.
