Auction Sale.— Mr H. B. Sorensen will Bell by auction a quantity of furniture and sundries, at 1 p.m., to-morrow, on premises in Dublin street, Lyttelton.

St Matthew's. — A tea meeting and concert in connection with St Matthew's Church, St Albans, will be held on Thursday evening next.

E_— gshere Caledonian Society. — This Society is showing considerable Bigns of vitality, and it is expected that this year's sports will equal any of the past both for prizes as well as competition. At a Committee meeting held on Wednesday, the principal details of the fifth annual concert were discussed, with a most satisfactory result. The concert will take place on Oct. 7

Mutual Improvement Society. — At the usual meeting of tbe St Asaph street Mutual Improvement Society a very interesting paper on " Phrenology " was read by Mr Hoole. The essayist, who was listened to with great attention throughout, briefly sketched the progress and advantages to be derived from a knowledge of the subject. There was a large attendance, and a most enjoyable- evening was spent.

Southbridge Lav/n Tennis Club. — The members of this Club are working steadily to obtain a good court on their newly-acquired ground. The surface has been : roughly levelled by ploughing and scarping, and it is now proposed to form an asphalt court on the Cryer street frontage. The Club are at present working up a concert, which will take place late next month, which ib is hoped will provide funds sufficient to pay for the work, or, at any rate, for the major portion of it. The Clab are to be congratulated on having secured so favourable a piece of ground, as not only is the locality central, but the shape is most suitable, and will give room for three grass courts as well as the asphalt one.
