AUCKLAND, August 27. Sir Kobert Stout, in reply to a question from the Political Finance Reform Association, has furnished the following information:—The total coat of the harbour defences of the Colony, including the amounts paid for land, &c, the erection of all buildings and fortsj with the expense of preparing sites and making roads, &c, is .£165,243. The sums paid for guns, am* munition, electric lights, and torpedo boats amount to £153,589, up to March 31, 1887 j inclusive of the expenditure incurred since that date, £13,665 and £71,124 respectively. The Association has circulated considerable information respecting the question of retrenchment, and opened an extensive correspondence with kindred societies throughout New Zealand, and also with the leading politicians in the Colony respecting the matter.
